Because most people in the US celebrate the cultural holiday that is Christmas, even if they are not practicing Christians. Therefore Dec 23rd is a welcome break to travel and prepare for the holiday.

Yes, it's unfair to other religions, but it also suits the needs of the majority of people. No, it won't change anytime soon.

Thank you, next.

Many of us don’t celebrate Christmas.

Yes, we know. Already covered.

You do realize MCPS school based staff don’t get paid for these days off, right? Their pay is stretched over the day, but it isn’t a compensated day.

No, a *few* of you don’t. Most people in this country do. You are the minority and no one will kowtow to your whims.

Feds get 12/26, the observed federal holiday, off. We have to use vacation time for the 23rd (except for DHS, I'm told).

Yeah, we got 16 hours.

I got nothing. What agency got 2 full days??

Yeah, but the State of Maryland gave its employees off today. It’s a paid holiday for them. So MCPS closed all of its offices.

Because Hogan suddenly made it a state holiday this week.
state employees are not the same as county or city employees. I’m a city employee in MD and today is not a holiday for us.

You're a vile human being.

How does a central office closure affect you?

And? I don't celebrate Rosh Hashanah but I still figure out how to spend a day off.

Ask your employer why they were not as thoughtful as the state and MCPS.

I guess your city's practice isn't to align their holidays with the state, then. Other cities/counties/school systems may have different practices.

This. I don't celebrate Christmas and many of those holidays either, but I enjoy and welcome those days off.

Did Dr. McKnight explain the cost associated with her decision to close all MCPS offices? Why have the Board approve a fiscal year calendar when Dr. McKnight keeps adding extra paid days off?

Last year, she closed Central Offices for the whole week between Christmas and New Year’s. Then the return to school in January was a disaster because of the lack of a plan for staff absences due to a spike in COVID.
