Why is MCPS offices closed on December 23rd? Seems like a repeat of last year with adding more time off for Central Office.

Feds get 12/26, the observed federal holiday, off. We have to use vacation time for the 23rd (except for DHS, I'm told).

Because Hogan suddenly made it a state holiday this week.

What are you talking about? People take vacation time if they want 12/23 off. I know some people that work at offices that are closed between Christmas and New Years, but that’s nowhere near the norm and wouldn’t even apply to 12/23.

Usually they get at least a half day early.

Depends on the agency. Mine announced 2 hours. Some give none. 16 hours is the outlier!

Because most people in the US celebrate the cultural holiday that is Christmas, even if they are not practicing Christians. Therefore Dec 23rd is a welcome break to travel and prepare for the holiday.

Yes, it's unfair to other religions, but it also suits the needs of the majority of people. No, it won't change anytime soon.

Thank you, next.

Many of us don’t celebrate Christmas.
