Your DD sounds great, I wouldn’t worry too much. Duke is just too competitive, apparently their acceptance rate completely plummeted this year, moreso than the ivies. Duke is better than many of the ivies anyways so your daughter still has a chance at a great school, don’t read too much into it! My son is applying RD to Duke but we know not to expect anything, but we’d regret not throwing our ring in the hat!

Son deferred 1580 on track to be salutatorian. Duke was really competitive this year.

Sorry. My DS was deferred in Dec 2020 and rejected in RD the following spring. Went through the whole merry-go-round “end of first semester senior year update” of additional recommendations, three calls to regional AO, prestigious merit-based language scholarship for summer abroad, straight As on first semester transcript…still got rejected. It became apparent that DS wasn’t what they were looking for. Shrug.
DS wasn’t a legacy, I know that they get a boost. ED admissions rate was closer to 20% or so back then, it’s obviously dropped.
I’m sure your child will do well with other admissions, GL!

I know several big donor kids who go there/went there. Duke is still one of the schools where you can be fairly sure of getting a kid in with enough $ and board member phone calls. I heard this from a board member who was pleased about it.

Sorry to hear… it looks like Duke early decision went all the way down to ~15% this year…

Congrats to her. I heard the Duke applicant pool was extremely strong this year

Yikes, son deferred with a 1550 and 3.97 unweighted at a magnet school. Our school always had a good relationship with Duke but several other strong students in his year applied Duke ED this year. Time to apply to other ivy leagues and hope for the best… hoping for Duke though. It seems they take a serious look at deferred applicants too

Daughter flat-out rejected with 1590/4.0, principal cellist, lots of volunteer work and leadership. Several national awards too. Just a data point if anyone wants it, but she’s strong and has already started finishing her other supplements. I suppose the Duke dream will have to wait for medical school.

Wow, absolutely brutal. Even seeing the crazy numbers Duke had this year, my son is still applying regular decision to Duke because it’s not an opportunity worth passing up. I hope your daughter ends up somewhere she likes just as much!

I'm sorry she didn't get her dream school, but she sounds fantastic and she'll undoubtedly land somewhere great ! Good luck!
