The problem is that a person must have skilled needs to go to a LTC facility - like nursing care because they can’t toilet themselves, get out of bed without assistance, etc. And if there are no rehab goals them Medicare will not pay for SNF - so you can refuse to leave, but you will be billed. ALF is private pay. You can call A Place for Mom and tell them your budget, and they might be able to find a small Assisted Living (the kind that is often housed in a neighborhood SFH), or something else within budget. |
You’ll be billed for each day you are there because Medicare will not pay, once rehab goals are met. And the state will not allow someone who does not meet criteria for nursing home level of care to stay there. When someone is referred for nursing home care, paperwork is completed to determine eligibility for LTC - it’s in place to protect people from being warehoused inappropriately in nursing homes. If someone meets the criteria, they (or their POA) must work with the facility to apply for LTC Medicaid (or private pay/spend down assets). Otherwise, they will be billed. Or they will call Adult Protective Services for assistance. |
^meant - they will be billed for extended rehab days. I don’t think they would become a resident of the nursing home. |
