How many books have you read this year? What are your practices?

Probably 20?

I read before bed, that’s about it, and I had a stretch of a few months this year where I stopped.

Books in all form count in my opinion so my count is probably close to 100. I always have an audio book in progress. I listen when in the car running errands and driving my kids (teens). They actually enjoy the books as well and give me a hard time because I keep listening without them. I also listen when cooking, cleaning and in the shower. I typically also have 2 hard copy books going. One for me and one with my teens. I made a deal with our oldest child (now in her 20s) that if she had to read a book for school I would read it as well. I have kept it up and it has made for some great conversations. It has also made it very easy to ensure my kids are reading the books One of my kids has ADHD/ASD and reading books at the same time has been a huge help to him staying focused and keeping him on track. Since I listen to audio books he knew that it was an acceptable way to "read" a book. So when he had a book that seemed intimidating to him for a summer reading assignment we chose to listen to the audio book while working on a puzzle together. He loved the book, we were able to pause the book and talk about characters, setting and themes, then we watched the movie and had a discussion about what was different. He got 100% on the test. It was the best way to start off his high school career and Lit is now his favorite subject.

That is so awesome. Reading your post seriously warmed my heart.

I feel like high school drained the joy of reading out of me (which I found again as an adult). I wonder if a parent doing what you did would have kept it going.

I've read 109 books this year. I'll probably finish 2 or 3 before the end of the year. Reading is my favorite hobby so it's easy for me to work it into my routine. I always have an audiobook and a regular book (either paper or e-book) going. I listen to audiobooks in my car, at the grocery store, and while I'm cooking and cleaning. I don't purchase many books. I get my books almost exclusively from the library. I don't watch a lot of tv which leaves more time for reading.

15-20? Sometimes I’ll go a month without reading, and other times I’ll read three books back-to-back. I find fiction the slowest going for me (ugh, why? I used to love fiction) and non fiction is the quickest to read through. I just read River of Doubt by Candice Millard, but then suffered through some blah novel until I put it to the side. My phone is my biggest impediment to reading.

If you read, then you must always have a book/kindle at the ready. Browse overdrive, browse kindle sales on a daily basis, etch

The goal is to always be in the middle of a book that is more interesting and easier to get into than DCUM or Twitter.

I personally want to know about those people reading these thousand page books. How do you sustain your attention?!

I don’t read many books (20), but occasionally read big tombs..I read Anna Karenina this year…little by little, inch by inch. I only read before bed, so it took me a couple months to finish. Although I absolutely loved it.

Any goals to increase? After reading this thread, I really want to recommit myself. I get so easily distracted with screens..

I recommend baths -- nothing like a soak with a book (and it's not like you'll want your phone there).

I read about one novel every two to three weeks. I only read at bedtime for about 20 minutes.

I'm at 33 and hope to finish two more by the end of the year. This is the first year I've actually kept track and have read more than ever as a result.

31 so far. I read a lot more last year because it was the year I quit drinking and found that I needed something to distract myself and fill my time. I do count my audiobooks, because my “me time” away from my kids is doing a hike in rock creek park while listening to an audiobook. I always have an audiobook going (usually nonfiction), a kindle library book (usually fiction), and two physical books (one each of fiction and nonfiction). I also like to mix up my fiction reading between lighter and more literary books.

I used to be able to sit and read a book for hours, but I get so distracted now. I think it’s my phone usage - I’m much less able to concentrate for long periods of time. It’s sad - I’m thinking of making my phone a “dumb phone” in the new year to fix my phone habits so I can better settle into a book.
