The North Face Backpack question

Can you just get the most likely one and include a gift receipt?

Also, I thought everyone was about the old school Jansport backpack these days?

Not the kid in question (or my kid or their friends or half the kids I see walking to HS) :p

+1, the odds of this not working out the way you hope are high if you don't.

Including that your sister prob already bought it.

There's 0 chance of my sister getting it, they have 4 kids and are tight with cash. My niece is getting a new iphone to replace her old one which is no longer supported. She's also getting her some clothing that my niece needs. My sister has complained to me about the cost. But I do want to get her the right backpack. I thought it was a model that was very common, like Nike AF1s that every teen has. But maybe not.

Maybe I’m the one who’s weird but if you know her mom has said it’s too expensive I think it’s wrong/passive-aggressive to buy it as a surprise. If a relative bought my kids AF1s without asking me I wouldn’t be happy.

I didn’t get that the mom thought she shouldn’t have it because of the price- it was that they had spent the money allocated for her Christmas presents on other things. The mom is getting her a new iPhone (when clearly there are cheaper choices) so I don’t think they are against expensive items altogether.

My freshman DD and many of her friends also have the Borealis. I agree with the idea to get that and include a gift receipt and just let her know you absolutely won’t be offended if she wants to trade it. What an awesome aunt!!

OP just to be clear- are you spending $100+ for each of the 4 kids?
Is your sister getting your children gifts?
So if you spend $500 on her kids and she spends $10 on yours…
Something to think about.

Could you instead get a gift certificate to the store that carries them (e.g., Dick's) and then she can pick it out herself? And you aren't giving her a gift that your sister specifically said no to?

I would just check with your sister. I heard Larla mention a backpack. Would that be a good gift for this year? I would want to make sure the mom did not mention it to a grandparent or ??

Am I the only one who thinks it’s crazy to spend $140 for a kid’s backpack?

Exactly. And buy it from a store that is close to their house, so the exchange can be easy.

No but this is why it's a great gift.
