They are forcing candidates to appeal to Black voters from the beginning of the process. Iowa and New Hampshire are not good states to put in charge of eliminating half of the Democratic field.

Primaries were better when the parties themselves chose convention delegates, instead of citizen voters. Open primaries should not exist and one should be a member of a party to vote for a candidate of that party.

That is controlled by state law. The party can choose to have a caucus or a primary but can’t change the state laws about who can vote in a primary. Some states do not have party registration. The Democrats allocate delegates proportionally to each candidate that gets 15 percent or more in the state or in a Congressional district. Republicans have winner take all primaries.

That’s how the Virginia GOP chose Youngkin, because they knew if they put it in the hands of the voters they were going to pick Amanda Chase.

Who would have been infinitely worse, and most likely not electable.
