They won't.. but it is showing up on the hs transcript. Either way, this grade won't matter too much. |
Which is more important for college admissions - weighted or unweighted GPA? Because if I requested to remove those As from gpa calculation, unweighted GPA would go down but weighted would go up. I think for UMD, they use weighted gpa? But private more often unweighted? |
There is no way to know for sure what is important for colleges. Doubt anyone is looking at middle school grades though... |
But if the college doesn’t recalculate (as a large public is less likely to do), that’s probably 6 unweighted semester grades for a typical kid (Span 1 & 2 and Algebra). Some may also have honors Geometry and Spanish 3. So a total of 10 grades, which is nearly an entire year’s worth. That’s a big impact on GPA, particularly weighted for many. |
| Most colleges use unweighted and recalc based on their own formulae. |
Should have clarified: Most selective colleges of the sort DCUM parents care about use unweighted... |
DD is a sophomore. |
You must have no clue the competition these kids are facing. Every grade matters if it affects GPA. |
Thank you! |
It does not. This is a perception propagated by parents who came from another country where student ranking matters for university admission a whole lot more than it does here. When students are in the top 5-10% of their school's graduating cohort, the emphasis shifts from GPA/test scores to other aspects of the student's application. 3.95 GPA vs. 4.0 are the same. 4.6 WGPA vs. 4.7, is the same. 1580 SAT vs 1600 SAT is the same. How do I know? My unhooked DC was in the top 50 kids of their class - not perfect academically. Still admitted to 3 (of 6 applied to) T20 colleges, where peers with "better" academics were not. |

Lots of minsinformation on this thread as the policy has changed in the last year.
It used to be this years senior class and older were stuck with the grade on the transcript unless they’d opted out in non th grade. But now it only is calculated into gpa if it helps the student. If it’s being calculated into gpa, that’s wrong and you should email the counselor. |
But based on unweighted gpa. They are still being calculated in even if they hurt weighted GPA, as discussed above. |
Also still on transcript |
Yes - still on transcript. And at least on our SGGCR, with a asterisk next to the B grade saying it wasn’t included in GPA. |
|
GPA needs to die.
Averaging and comparing grades across different subjects and teachers is completely idiotic. Is orchestra harder than art? History or Chemistry? Does a weighted A in "Honors" geometry cancel out a B in English? Any college that admits based on GPA is stupid. And don't even get me started on "merit"-based scholarships. Only students who are already educated deserve a higher education? |
