This is a perception propagated by parents who came from another country where student ranking matters for university admission a whole lot more than it does here. When students are in the top 5-10% of their school's graduating cohort, the emphasis shifts from GPA/test scores to other aspects of the student's application. 3.95 GPA vs. 4.0 are the same. 4.6 WGPA vs. 4.7, is the same. 1580 SAT vs 1600 SAT is the same. How do I know? My unhooked DC was in the top 50 kids of their class - not perfect academically. Still admitted to 3 (of 6 applied to) T20 colleges, where peers with "better" academics were not.[/quote]
