Advent wreaths are for the season before Christmas. The season before Christmas is advent a time to reflect on the time before Christ was born.

I have many happy memories of all the families in my church getting together in the hall to make wreaths. We'd use florist pins to hold greenery onto styrafoam rings. We always had 4 red candles and 1 white (Presbyterian).

We have one with a Celtic design. I purchased it from a seasonal sale at a church years ago - but I am confident you can get something similar from Amazon.

Blessings for the season of advent

Episcopalian here: my daughter made a fresh one at church today. Three purple candles, one pink But whenthe greenery turns brown, as it always does over the course of the month, I'll replace it with this:

I got it at Goodwill for $3.

Scandinavian Lutheran. Four red candies for the four Sundays of advent. White Christ candle in the middle for Christmas Day.

You can find nice vintage ones on eBay.

That would make you Catholic?

We make a new one as a family every year. Ring of oasis floral foam on a tray, with candleholders and greenery from the yard stuck in. Adding water on a regular basis keeps everything lasting through Epiphany. (For those keeping score: Protestant, purple and pink candles)

No, that’s only for Catholic wreaths. Protestants often have red candles. Note how you equate Christianity with Catholicism.

I'm Christian (protestant) and have always had 3 purple, 1 pink and 1 white in the middle. (Note how quickly you made a derogatory comment.)

Derogatory? Most of my best friends are Catholics. By most I mean at least 75%. You can look up the history of advent wreaths if you don’t believe me. But it doesn’t matter to me what colors you use. One thing that’s objectively wrong is that the HAVE to be purple and pink as PP stated. That’s wrong. Even in Catholic countries in Europe, you can buy whichever color you like. Pink, red, white, yellow, gold, whatever. I like white, most people I know have red candles. There’s no rule.

Go reread your own post. You are the one who suggested there were different rules for different religions and then made a rude accusation against a Catholic.

Here is a history of the advent wreath, including a discussion of candle colors. It is a Catholic source, but discusses other Christian traditions as well.

For Catholics: "To reinforce the symbolism of the liturgical vestments worn by priests, Catholics swapped the red candles for three purple candles—the color typically associated with penance—and one pink, the color of rejoicing worn on the third Sunday of Advent [Gaudete Sunday]."

And I can do that with red candles, purple candles or rainbow candles. Honestly this is why more and more people turn away from organized religion - because the wrong color of candles somehow means you aren't doing it right.

I've turned away from organized religion. I have an advent wreath. My rejection of religion has nothing to do with candle colors, or "doing it right".
