Ascending v. Descending? Or just stuck?

I know at our K-8, Bullis has grown in terms of popularity of HS admissions. It used to be the fall back for kids that didn't get accepted anywhere else and now many more apply and not everyone is accepted. Think they really turned around their program in the past 3-4 years.

Our K-8 as well.

Wow, I hope not. The culture there a number of years ago is what earned them a not so great reputation. I would hope they aim higher.

I agree. The past is pretty horrible there. Focus on the future.

I do not understand the issue people have with Landon. It looks like they are definitely moving in the right direction with investments across their campus structurally. Their curriculum and teachers are on par with the top schools in the area. Is it because they only admit a limited number of upper school boys each year and people are mad because their DS did not get admitted?

It’s not on our list so no.

I don't find this to be a k-12 issue as much of a point of contention at all lower schools

That’s sad.

We considered Landon but last summer their summer academic class was terrible, to put it nicely. They need to up their teaching game. When we and other parents complained, nothing changed and they weren't responsive.

What a pity. Jim is such a good head. I wonder if his team is as good

Even just in 6 years, it seems like the reputation, vibe, and even physical plant has changed at most schools. But others seem forever stuck (looking at you, Maret). I don't want to slant the discussion with my own views, although Maret does seem like a time capsule from the 90s, with indoor athletic facilities from the 40s.

So what schools rising and which ones losing their luster?

I agree. It seems like as Maret has shot up in the academic rankings to equal the likes of GDS, Sidwell, etc. it has paid less attention to its athletic facilities. I think they're building a new off-campus outdoor facility though.

This didn’t happen at least not during the past six years.

NP. Maret has same college matriculation as Sidwell and GDS so I generally would agree with PP. Plus they have better athletics in general (aside from Sidwell with better bball). I would say Maret’s star has been rising quite a bit the last few years.

New intriguing family. Prove me otherwise. We are being recruiter by both schools. From what I’ve seen they literally have the same college schools. If not better at Maret based on %. I honestly don’t see a difference between Maret and Sidwell. Went to the Maret football semi finals game today. Met quite a few families that are headed to Ivy League.

They are generally all “ascending” since the density and children in the area keep increasing and the public schools keep botching their reading & math curricula, and dumb down their behavior, grading and behavior policies.

Keep an eye out for private schools that did the same, you’d be surprised at the changes there. “Descending”.

Long wait lists everywhere since Covid uptick in applicants.
But do your homework.

I think bullis is in the up and up but if the lower school buys into too much kumbaya it won’t succeed at stronger academics in upper school.

This is demonstrably false.

Ah. Your child is a recruited-not-technically athlete. Yes, the marquee football, basketball and baseball players DO matriculate to the same schools from Maret and Sidwell and STA. Especially if URM.

So your football player will bet set wherever he goes and you should choose the high school you like best. They’ll all give you an offer

Not much Maret can do with the physical existing space given the neighborhood restrictions. My kid is looking at playing bball and baseball there so while I do wish they had a gym that looked like Sidwell, I am intrigued with the new outdoor facilities.

Neighborhood restrictions? Their campus is a historic landmark. That has nothing to do with the neighborhood.
