I though tthe food forum was the only one without the mean-spririted comments. Go away mean old spelling police!
Now, where we... back to confessions. I let my 14 month old salt and pepper potato chips after she's thrown everything else I offerred for dinner on the floor. This morning, when I was opening up a box of cookies to bring one for lunch, she heard the crumpling package sound and started begging: "Chips! Chips!" |

We eat very healthy overall but I know some other parents would be appalled that we don't eat dinner with our toddler. She eats dinner we pack, at daycare. We get home at 6:30 and I just want to hang out with her, and wind down, so she can go to be by 8. DH and I eat later.
She eats breakfast at home since we start the day later...I try to eat with her but if she's eating oatmeal and I want yogurt with granola that day, she wants what I want so sometimes I don't eat with her and DH is usually doing meal prep during that time. She stays home with me on Friday but that tends to be our take out night so we don't eat together then either! I guess we could try eating together Saturday or Sunday night but she eats really simple foods (frozen vegetables, plain baked chicken, whole wheat pasta with a really simple sauce I make, almond butter on whole wheat, fresh fruit, etc. and she doesn't like our more "complicated" meals like if we do a stir fry with strong seasonings, etc.). I hope as she gets older we will, and definitely when she is school-aged we will do a family dinner every night...but right now we are not doing the family meals. Even though I think she has great eating habits and we all eat healthy, I feel guilty, I CONFESS! |
| 14:23 poster - you should start giving your child some of what you eat so she doesn't become a picky eater. We have always given our DD what we eat (within reason, no sauerkraut) and she's a great eater, all types of diff. ethnic foods. |
We sound exactly like you, PP, besides the eating dinner at daycare (she doesn't go to daycare, otherwise we might do that, too! SHe eats super healthy food, but rarely eats what we eat, mostly because I make her dinner around 6:00 and DH doesn't get home until 7:00, so we eat after we put her to bed. She does eat hamburgers with us when we grill, and black bean soup that we make and have for several meals during the week. But we tend to eat more complex dishes thats she simply doesn't like -- we've tried a bunch.
On the confessions front -- I'm often guilty of letting her snack too late in the day if it serves my needs (i.e. to occupy or pacify her in a store) and then she'll eat a very small dinner or none at all. I do try to make the snacks healthy, though. Oh, and the ice cream thing -- if I have a craving I can also convince myself it was her idea
Love this thread, BTW! |
We've tried - but will keep trying. I think of her as a great eater right now because she loves all fruits and vegetables (broccoli! who gets excited about broccoli!?) but I think we will start trying more of our spicier stuff. She does love hummus, but only certain kinds. It's a slippery slope because I don't want to get her used to the "tastier" more complicated foods we like and then have her shun the simple healthy stuff, like plain vegetables, plain black beans, etc. |

If I am out of paper towels I do not wash the lettuce because I dry it with paper towels and I hate wet lettuce; so if we are out I don't wash it. I confess sometimes I don't wash it because I am just too lazy.
We let DS 21 months eat while watching TV I buy M&M's for DS potty treats and eat most of them myself, although he recently started really using the potty with a vengeance and we ran out on more than one occasion due to my snacking on them DS eats almost no veggies, but will drink V-8 juice. I tell myself that the veggie juice overrides all the sodium it contains to make myself feel better about him not eating veggies |
22:58 I read somewhere that your kid can get all the vitamins etc they need just by eating fruit. Veggies are overrated.
|
Thanks! That makes me feel better, he eats TONS of fruit. I mean who likes to eat most veggies as a kid? And please spare me the "my DC eats every veggie on the face of the earth and loves them" comments. |
Here's a secret trick I have for the lettuce person. Buy a salad spinner. They make great toys for kids--even my 14 month old likes to spin the lettuce. Older kids can get up on a stepstool to rinse the lettuce and the little guys can spin it. I'd love not to rinse my lettuce, but some of them have sand and grit, which is not too appetizing! |
| PP here with the 14 month old salt and pepper potato chip addict. I forgot to mention that I also let her taste my caffe lattes and wine. She has a very sophisticated palate! |
We used to do that with older DC in order for him to realize he won't like it and won't ask. And it worked! However, my younger DD LOVES the taste of wine and liquoir. One time she had a huge tantrum becuase we didn't let her more than a sip of DH's drink. It was a huge issue for a week, but after a constant NO she doesn't ask anymore. |
| My kids love spaghettiOs (sp?), had them for lunch yesterday and I just found out they are being recalled. |
| I let my three yo eat cereal and milk for dinner if he asks for it. I figure Special K is fortified, so at least he's getting some vitamins. |
| I never wash fruit before I eat it, never have. |
