I agree that the Republican party is no longer a party, but rather a cult that undermines the freedom of our country. What I’ve never understood, though, is what partisan affilliation has to do with local politics. It seems to me that national and state issues are different from local issues. Pothole repair, trash collection, water and sewer services, new road construction, more affordable housing and commercial development vs. increased traffic and infrastructure burden, school zoning, senior citizen programs, etc., may or may not be locally controversial, but these aren’t partisan issues. |
Let's not pretend the Dems don't have their own problems. Dan Robinson got one of my votes. |
Blindly voting for a party is equally as harmful as being a Trump supporter. I vote for the best candidate. They are mostly blue but there are some Republicans in the mix. My question about Wells versus Oven is because I noticed that Oven hasn’t replied and seems disinterested. I’m currently reading my local newspaper (Olney gazette) and she didn’t bother replying to them. Then when I did a little more research she failed to reply other websites and media too. So did another candidate, who I will not be voting for Erikson. I’m looking for candidates who are engaged and eager to be part of the community especially when it comes to Board of Education. I’m not looking for a candidate who is already ignoring the constituents. |
I don't agree with this. Rivera Oven has participated in forums and been interviewed. https://youtu.be/M212GaGiyBY https://bethesdamagazine.com/2022/10/20/community-activist-and-accountant-face-off-for-district-1-school-board-seat/ She's also the only one of the BOE candidates to be endorsed by both MCEA and the Washington Post. |
Agree. There is someone on this board who keeps trying to start that rumor about Rivera Owen but I think it’s just anonymous message board nonsense |
I can be honest on this board so I was doing my research on the candidates and on Wells’ Facebook page she has a graphic where she lists Oven’s media and campaign participation. When I checked that out it seems true (https://bethesdamagazine.com/2022-general-election-voters-guide/school-board-district-1/), although I didn’t research if she arrived late or didn’t at least some meetings. that’s why I came to ask because I’d like to know what’s going on. It’s nice of the Washington post and MCEA has endorsed her but is she just relying on that and not putting an effort to connect with constituents? I’m 90% sure Oven will win anyway. |
Boom. I’m voting for Sullivan. I know the man has spelling issues, but he has the endorsement of the police - and he’s a successful black man who went through MCPD and owns an engineering firm in the County. IMHO, we need more people like him and fewer professional activists as politicians. And yes, he’s an R, but he condemned Jan 6 as it was ongoing. |
That should be MCPS, sorry! |
Same here, I voted Sully. Elrich just hasn't been working fo the County. If Blair had won the primary, I'd have gone for Blair instead. |
A Washington Post endorsement is honestly not worth much anymore. Her main claim to a BOE seat seems to be representation. That’s not enough for me. I understand that Wells is not everyone’s cup of tea. But MCPS has suffered too long from groupthink and not enough BOE members asking tough questions and engaging in proper oversight. I have confidence that Wells will do that and it’s why I’m going to vote for her. |
You do know most Christian churches say the same thing, right? So are you going to rule out Christians from holding office? Separation of Church and State. the FIRST Amendment. As long as candidates abide by that, there is no problem. |
So offensive to dismiss someone’s positions and accomplishments this way. Only person to get both MCEA and WaPo to endorse her and you think her only claim is “representation”. Meanwhile Wells is fundamentally out of step with the large majority of MoCo residents on important issues. |
Rivera Oven's responses are in that BB voters guide now. |
I don’t really understand your point. Getting endorsements is not a professional accomplishment. |
Thank you for that update. They were not in there yesterday when I linked. |
