How much $$ is your freshman spending on fun?

Anonymous
My kid has access to our accounts (Amazon, AmEx, Uber, Starbucks, Spotify, Kohls, Macy's, Target, Costco) and can use as needed. He is however super thrifty because his friends are super thrifty and on budget. He has unlimited dining option on campus, tons of free guest passes and meal dollars. Every once in a while he will charge something to eat at night - pizza, coffee etc. He has $10K in his account. Every time some relative gave him money, we kept it. So when he went to college, we just opened up an account for him. Till now, most of the events he has gone to has cost him very little. He carries around $40 bucks on him. Does not vape/drink, does not have a car. So cost is very low for him.

He is very frugal and minimalistic. He buys from Old Navy and uses stuff that is several years old. He will buy gear and whatever he needs when he needs it, but he is basically not a very showoffy person.

Mine has a ridiculous food plan so the average is $200 a month so far.

They spend their own money on "fun", though I will pay for something like concert tickets, a football game, etc.

$500?! Do they not eat at a dining hall? how extravagant

It’s equal to the meal plan but after F year no they don’t eat at the dining hall

No idea. He has his own bank account.

OP asked specifically about freshmen students, and you responded with an amount you give to a sophomore or higher.

About 300/month of her own money on fun stuff (read:not necessary things, like going out to restaurants and bars)

Probably around 500-600/mo for my freshman so far. Mostly eating and ubers and some going out and sporting events.

Keeping up with the Jones's has its price.

For us, it’s averaging about $25-$50 per week, so about $100-$200 per month. Most of that has been the occasional weekend meal off-campus, or treats using those little starship robots (which have a huge mark-up—we’ve warned DS to be careful about using those).

Buying new jeans, attending a few concerts is “keeping up with the joneses “? Ok

The college events/entertainment are mostly free or super cheap, so not much need to spend a ton of money. They don't have a kitchen as freshmen, so I'm sure the food spending will go up once they do.

I am not that pp but my kid is going to school in a big city with lots to do and I told him I wouldn't send him there without also helping him take advantage of being in this city and the associated costs. It would be different if he were in, say, rural Virginia.

I grew up in a big city. There is always plenty to do and explore that will not cost you $500 a month. Most big cities offer lots of stuff at a discount to college students.
Naturally if one wants to eat out a lot or go shopping it will add up quickly.
