And yes, the international definition of human trafficking is limited to exploration of the human for a very limited range of purposes.

Here is the original complaint which is a fascinating read: The Masts lied to the Virginia court system and tried immediately to get custody after Joshua Mast found out the baby was in the hospital. This isn't a case of a soldier trying to adopt the baby he himself rescued from the rubble. The marine literally was a lawyer in an office over there. He had access to the database about civilian casualties and injuries and saw the baby listed on there. Sickening.

The US (and other countries) have a pretty narrow definition of human trafficking either labor or sexual exploitation). Maybe this afghan couple is being used a test case to try and expand that law. I wonder if this case could fall under migrant smuggling. It also may just be plain old fashioned kidnapping.

This case also involves on the defendant side: Women for Afghan Women/ Virginia Community Center in Alexandria and its general counsel Kimberly Motley who tracked down the guardians/cousins in Afghanistan, and lied to them that the Masts were trying to help them get medical treatment for the baby. The Masts had never even met the baby before it came to the US. This story is absolutely nuts.

Kimberly Motley, Joshua Mast and his brother all need to lose their law licenses.
