Or trying to get minorities and exclude the not so photogenic

As a teacher w/2 kids who've gone through this process a few times, you may want to consider saving your energy for the big stuff. It's way too exhausting to overthink each tiny detail along the way. When you think about it, if your kid is putting their best foot forward, but was rejected for an insufficient application photo, you don't want to join that community.

At Holton the directories are created mid- summer. The application photo is used until the next year’s photos are uploaded. So, don’t choose anything over the top.

So if you have a biracial kid who is part white, you should try for a photo that emphasizes the non-whiteness?

OP, I know you're not trying to come off this way, but please understand that this process will be a lot less stressful if you begin to accept that there's very little you can do affirmatively to change your child's chances of admission. Almost everything is either baked in already or out of your control.

I have served on admissions committees for many years. This is simply so we can remember your child from the play dates, etc.

Don’t overthink this! At our school it helps to have a face w/ a name. They do several tours at a time and make a point of greeting the visiting child by name. It’s also used when the teachers meet after visits bc they are seeing a lot of applicants and it can be used to jog their memories. Anyone thinking it’s used for race or whatever else is overthinking this. Don’t forget all those details are in the actual application. The photo is used for logistical and organizational purposes.
