| Ok this question sounds insane even to me, but I am second-guessing myself. Does the photo we upload of our child during the application process matter? Can I just upload any recent photo or should I be looking for something that shows her personality or something? |
| any recent photo |
| Ours suggested uploading their school photo. |
| A recent photo is fine. Don't do anything special. |
| Thank you! |
| Any recent photo that isn't absurd. School picture or similar is best. Definitely don't use a mug shot - sets the wrong tone. |
|
No mug shots and nothing that makes it look like you’re trying to hard. I worked at a private school a few years ago and read an application with a kid dressed in head to toe designer clothes. With obvious logos everywhere. I was embarrassed for them.
Anywhere in the middle is perfect. Good luck! |
| Quite possible that if you’re admitted and attend that photo will be used in the directory until they get their school photo taken… |
|
haha, i stressed over this as well, OP!
most of the photos of DS i have are silly, hes looking away, eyes closed, etc... we just did a quick one for Ravenna, put on a clean sweater, took a quick photo outside with good lighting. it actually came out so good i might use it for our christmas card, HAHAHAHA (am not kidding) |
| Why do they need a photo? To meet out the browns and the clowns? |
Yeah I find it interesting too. One school asks for an applicant photo and a family photo... |
|
We didn't submit a photo for any application. It just seemed odd to me. Our child was seen at tours, interviews and shadow days. I figured that was good enough.

| My cynical answer has to do with ensuring visible racial diversity. My less cynical answer is that it might involve admissions folks to keep track of the kids more easily if they can put a name to a face. And, of course, the secret sauce of independent school admissions is parents' photographic abilities, so that's where you should really be putting your efforts. (just kidding. I know it's all A Lot--practically a third job!) |
| * enable, not involve. |
|
They're just trying to put a face to a name. This photo will most likely not be used in a directory. These photos are usually the professional photo taken at the beginning of the year at school.
As a teacher w/2 kids who've gone through this process a few times, you may want to consider saving your energy for the big stuff. It's way too exhausting to overthink each tiny detail along the way. When you think about it, if your kid is putting their best foot forward, but was rejected for an insufficient application photo, you don't want to join that community. |
