Club volleyball help! Which teams are less insane and less $$$?

My sophomore daughter is doing VYI and is enjoying it. They practice once a week for 90 minutes, games on the weekend, and VYI offers a weekly clinic. It's VYI House League.

If you are NOVA, check out BRYC. If DD hasn't played anything other than rec or HS, BRYC may be a good option and their fees are much lower because they don't do as many tournaments. The older kids get, the more expensive. The more competitive, tends to also drive cost higher and/or the facilities they use which drive cost higher to use the facilities etc.

If your kid is on the shorter side, but a decent player - St James, EC Power, Loudoun Elite, Vienna Elite are all good clubs (with some but not extensive travel). If your DD is on the very tall side (depending on age) - most of the big clubs are in play - Paramount, VA Elite, VA Juniors, MD Juniors. If your kid is off the charts in terms of size and athleticism, Metro’s your place. Good luck to you.

Many of those clubs are still quite competitive. There just aren’t enough clubs in the area for the amount of people who want to play. This is a good list of the local clubs: https://www.novavolleyballalliance.org/club.

Your child should register for the clinics so they can go and get a feel for the club and be seen by the coaches. They usually can’t just show up on tryout day and hope to make the team.

Agree with these PPs. Our DD has played since 11s and now is in HS. I heard that 15s age group explodes because girls play in HS and realize they want to play more and/or want to have more of a fighting chance to make JV because there will be fewer spots that they are competing on in the next year. There aren't as many clubs to meet demand compared to pre-COVID but each year seems to give a potentially new option as clubs open/expand. This tends to be more true for 12-13yr olds vs HS. If there is enough demand, clubs may add another team. ECP might have done this last year depending on the age group. They looked at potential 3 15s last year. Other clubs may consider adding a 2nd team if they can find the facilities and coaches.

There is a caveat to the super competitive clubs and being tall - DD still needs a very good bit of athleticism to show potential. If the person is tall but really doesn't move much and not serious about vball competition, being tall will not give them an automatic ride at more competitive clubs, except maybe VA Elite will still invest time and give a spot.

For rankings across the region, go to advancedeventsystems.com and filter by age group and pick 'Chesapeake Region' (MD, DC, VA, a few WV and DE) - this is where the rankings were pulled for the novavolleyballalliance website. Unfortunately, it is pre-season and they just wiped most of the details in Sept in prep for the upcoming season. You can still filter to look at rankings for last season but you can't click in and see where the teams played tournaments and how they did. Once the season starts, it gets updated every Tuesday and stays up through the summer.

DD has some teammates that played Momentum and they seemed to like them ok. Look at Grit, Libero, NVVA for out by Dulles/Sterling/Ashburn. No Panic is out there too but have no insight on the team. BRYC is a good level for new to club HS level and costs less. ECP and StJ have 2 teams so more opportunities there vs competing for just a few spots . MVSA in MD has a bunch of teams so more options. Metro regional (eg Metro South, Central, East, North etc) are potential options around the area. There is South County (for Natl Harbor type area). Columbia, MD Juniors, Arundel County and LAVA are on the eastern side of MD. Liberty Elite is really good up near Hagerstown but may not field a 15s team (they didn't do 14s last year).

Most definitely agree that DD must go to the clinics for these clubs to get a sense for the coaches and how they operate and ask more questions. Recruiting for prospectives are going on during the pre-season at these clinics where clubs can get a longer look at players vs what may only be covered very briefly in one 90-120min tryout to see overall player capability and fit. It gets harder as players get older to find spots with returning players who have demonstrated their skills, players that have been going to the summer and fall camps/clinics etc. Go to the clubs' websites to see where they may play and fees (some haven't updated yet while others have had stuff out for a bit and keep adding more details each week). Understand who the coach will be for DDs age group because some it will be the coach that will drive the whole experience for most clubs vs the club itself for many clubs.

And from what I can tell - it ends up being +$9k. Not sure I’m right though - we haven’t gone down that path yet.

Check out VAVA in Virginia, practice in Herndon VA. Good coaches (many coached at VA Jrs) and into developing the girls all around game. Fit that Mid-level club.

That's a very helpful breakdown. We live in Northeast DC, so trying to find a DC or MD club - do you know similar info for DC and/or MD?

Moco or MVSA from a MD perspective. I’m not familiar with the DC volleyball scene.

MVSA has decided to try to get as many teams per age group as they can and it has ruined the program. MOCO is run by a guy who got run out of MVSA and usually can't get enough coaches to cover all the teams and usually asks a parent to get I<PACT certified to coach a team that their kids can play on.

The key is to get on a team at a younger age with coaches that are established and not jumping from club to club.

Understand the travel requirements and most tournaments start at 7 am and end at 6 pm they are long days but at least you are inside.
