Club volleyball help! Which teams are less insane and less $$$?

Anonymous
I am having a hard time finding out what the NoVa club volleyball teams are really like. I’d love any info about which ones are harder to get on and which are more reasonable, both for cost and player performance. My HS DD would love a mid-level kind of club with not too far travel and that won’t drain our back account.

What age is your DD, and how tall is she? Mid level is all relative in volleyball - if your kid is 6’3 and can’t hit the ball, it doesn’t matter - every club will take them. If your kid is on the shorter side, but a decent player - St James, EC Power, Loudoun Elite, Vienna Elite are all good clubs (with some but not extensive travel). If your DD is on the very tall side (depending on age) - most of the big clubs are in play - Paramount, VA Elite, VA Juniors, MD Juniors. If your kid is off the charts in terms of size and athleticism, Metro’s your place. Good luck to you.

Many of those clubs are still quite competitive. There just aren’t enough clubs in the area for the amount of people who want to play. This is a good list of the local clubs: https://www.novavolleyballalliance.org/club.

Your child should register for the clinics so they can go and get a feel for the club and be seen by the coaches. They usually can’t just show up on tryout day and hope to make the team.

This webpage has a table ranking the local teams…

“To help you evaluate clubs in an unbiased manner, the next sections list club teams in Northern Virginia using the AES Power Ranking for comparisons. The ranking indicates how well each club team did at competitive tournaments last season.“

That chart is so helpful! Is there a similar one for DC clubs and/or MD clubs? I've been looking for just that type of comparison...

Thank you!

That's a very helpful breakdown. We live in Northeast DC, so trying to find a DC or MD club - do you know similar info for DC and/or MD?

Not OP - Are there any clubs that aren’t super expensive? Some of those clubs mentioned are way out of our price range.

Moco or MVSA from a MD perspective. I’m not familiar with the DC volleyball scene.

Can you elaborate? My DD played for them last season and we have mixed feelings about them. Would love to hear someone else’s POV.

Chantilly Youth Association has house and select teams for high school players in the fall and the spring.

Mediocre teams, unqualified coaches, lack of effective communication. Got a little tired if them changing schedules or not having the courts they said they would. Basically a place for kids to play, but not very seriously. Which may be fine for some. But their lack of organization and priorities shines thru.
