Anyone else surprised by their 2022 Virginia car tax?

yeah, we could use a man like James Gilmore again!

And yet, progressives say that everyone should "just" get rid of their old gas car that's all paid for to buy a $65,000 base sticker EV car that comes with an annual car tax bill $1500 higher than their old car.

And they don't even see this as a problem for anyone. It is madness.

Yeah, pisses me off. My gas cars are paid for. If they want me to invest in a new car, they need to not punish people for making investments in new more efficient goods.

Lol, Youngkin pulled a bait and switch on you.

First you fell for CRT. And now you fell for his “fiscal responsibility.”

Gotta pay the piper.

This is a tax paid to the county, not the state. Youngkin is not involved in this.

For those in Alexandria, the city council changed the relief rates for those at the lowest end so people with cars worth under $5000 pay no tax (used to be $1000), and people with cars worth more than $20k and $25k get a lot less relief.

It was news to me that people with cars worth less than $5000 use fewer city resources than people with more expensive cars. In 2022, I paid over $100 more for my 2018 CR-V than I did in 2021. Ridiculous.

Of course they did, because...equity.

I have a 2011 Tahoe, which has almost doubled in assessment since 2019; which is insane. Alexandria sucks.

You are talking to a wall. The PP doesn't actually live in Virginia given their general lack of knowledge about Virginia government. He just likes to fling his poo.

It's a wealth tax, not an incentive to buy electric vehicles.

The prices of cars were one of the biggest drivers in inflation at one point. The chip shortage continues to have real impacts. The counties should have lowered their rates to compensate for the increased assessments, but you know they saw $$$. To be fair, they are dealing with inflation too. Hard to keep a budget level when the cost of everything has gone up.

The question is what will they do when the chip makers catch up, recession kicks in, and prices drop again?

Most if not all of the car tax went to schools, which are spending it on woke crap.

The car tax is up because:

1). The used vehicle market went crazy
2). The reimbursement from the state of VA was lowered

Fairfax Co actually cut the assessment amount by 15%. I think other counties did the same.

If the car tax went away, they would replace it with higher income taxes or sales taxes. Frankly, I’m fine with it since it is a progressive tax that hits people who waste money on expensive cars.

I think our car tax was $150. We have one 12 year old car. The thought of paying a car tax has really discouraged us from buying a second/nice car.

I will say that living in DC definitely pays off tax wise if your cars are worth very little and your income is high!

When people talk about moving from DC to Virginia because the taxes are lower, they are not factoring in these fees. And in many parts of northern Virginia, you have to have at least one, and in many cases, multiple cars, to manage the household.

Those feed add up.
