Anyone else surprised by their 2022 Virginia car tax?

I guess I wasn't paying close attention to info about my personal property tax this year, but I was very surprised this afternoon to go online to pay my taxes and notice that my fee was about 50% higher than last year- for an eight year old car!

I get that car values have gone up because of the pandemic, but it seems a bit excessive that I'm paying more this year than I paid in 2017. Am I the only Virginia resident who wasn't tracking this?

maybe that's to pay for the $500 "rebate" checks we received as VA taxpayers. Political theater I guess but I do not know.

Yes, I openly gasped when I saw the amount. I had no idea so expensive. Glad to know it wasn’t just us.

I just paid a 3k bill. The car was assessed at more than I paid for it in 2021. Ouch.

Has anyone filed an appeal of their assessment? Or planning to?

I see that you can appeal if the car has higher mileage or body damage. I'm wondering how high the mileage or how much body damage is needed to cause the value to be lower.

I just paid $1500. I am incensed. I'm old enough to remember "NO CAR TAX" politicians and yet here we are.

I'd vote for whoever (of either party!) gets rid of the car tax. It's insane and keeps people from buying new cars.

I actually couldn't afford it when I moved here. My college gift from parents and grandparents was a new car. I only made 34k and the car tax was 2k. Kept my old plates for years until I could afford the car tax. First and last months rent + the car tax was too much.

Loudoun county- my 3 year old Odyssey was $160 more than last year. My 2021 car was $1200, but was less than last year.

Even with $400 of »Car Tax Relief, » on two older cars, we paid almost 50 pct more on car tax this year than we did last year. Remarkable.

We own 2014 and 2018 (non luxury) cars and I also was taken aback when I saw the personal property tax amount due.

Yeah, I'll never own a nice car again as long as I live in VA.
