Current 8th grader was through the lottery system. Did your kid take the cogat test?

Current 8th graders were not through the lottery system. They took the Cogat in November 2019 and got notified they were admitted in Jan 2020. Then they started middle school virtually.

I think you're getting your years mixed up. Current 8th graders were admitted to the TPMS magnet in January of 2020, before most people knew the word "Covid". Yes, they took the Cogat.

The good news is this is the last year of lottery, but nobody knows what's next.

Have you seen this somewhere official? I hadn't heard that it was definitely going away.

Not the PP, but I believe the official line is that this is the final year of the "test" or "pilot" and that whatever comes next will either continue the pilot or attempt something diferent.

It's not clear to me that the CogAT is a great solution either, but it would be hard to do worse than the lottery.

However, the HS hasn't used a lottery. I'm curious how that's worked out. There are plenty of smart kids at TPMS even with the lottery, but it isn't the same as before. I'm glad more kids get a chance now. It's also clear that many more are capable of doing the work than the number they admit.

I'd like to see teacher recommendations and a higher bar for math (geometry) since this is a stem magnet.

Not all high school magnets are lotteries.

One of my 2 kids who went through the magnet came from
our home middle. The other went to TPMS. They both did great at Blair.
