The tour thing seems silly. It’s a school. Langley is really nice and recently renovated. Mclean is a dump but it’s a good school. You wouldn’t find out much from a tour. If you just want to see the inside go to a performance of the band, a play or basketball game.
I wouldn’t commit to paying 200k for private school because I was annoyed I couldn’t tour a public school. |
| You are making your housing choice based on a language your child wants to take because they are into anime? That seems a bit short sighted, but whatever. You should know that even if japanese is in the catalog at at school, it doesnt guarantee it will be offered. If they don’t have enough enrollment, they wont offer sections. |
Seriously. |
| SLHS has Japanese and is going to keep having Japanese because of the Fox Mill Language immersion program. I know Carson has Japanese in MS for the LI kids,I don’t know if there is Japanese for non-LI kids. |

My oldest toured Langley and we were not in FCPS, but this was a few years ago (pre C19).
A parent volunteer conducted the tour, and was very pleasant. Perhaps the current principal does not allow it? |

Original poster here. People for some reason oppose tours but I mean not really touring around inside of the school. I don't need to know how big their cafeteria is for example. More about the chance to ask questions about school. If there's a tour or open house or some kind of meeting with prospective families I could ask those questions. Before I decide where to live. School is such a big factor to determine where to live so no matter what those people think, I still think it is better to have the chance to talk to the school. FCPS or school website is, like I said, not answering questions I had. And if the front desk who picked up my phone, explained more, I could be satisfied with her answers. But no one, not the website, not the school, not FCPS gave me the answers to my questions. So for people who think the tour is silly, that is your opinion. But my opinion is different. I think it is important to know what kind of program my kids are going in.
Anyway, for the people who gave me the answers here, thank you so much. |
Contact the PTSA. They will know if parent volunteers still do tours at Langley. Fcps offices will be useless on that. I’d pick Langley, people still complain about McLean being overcrowded and in bad repair. |
I’m the poster who provided the links to the Cooper and Langley web pages with information about the world languages program (we’re actually at McLean but looked at and am familiar with both schools). You can find out a fair amount about McLean - both the good and the bad - by scanning past issues of the school newspaper at https://issuu.com/the_highlander Langley also has a student newspaper, but it does not consistently post past editions online to my knowledge. However, if you have specific questions, I’d think someone could try and answer them for you here. |
We are a Langley family and are happy with the pyramid. You can't take Japanese at Cooper unless you were in immersion, but you can take it as a Freshman in HS, among other languages. FCPS is under attack right now, which is probably why they (and other schools) don't want to do tours -- the last thing you want is a prospective parent visiting the library and seeing a controversial book displayed and then creating public outrage about it. I agree with PP's suggestion: get in touch with the PTSA for additional info. |
I am the original poster. Thank you so much. Your information was really helpful as well as this post. I will look into both McLean and Langely. Of course, not only foreign language will be a factor to decide where to live but I would like to listen to my kid's preferences too because school will be a big part of their life. I still have 2 years for her to get into high school so I will prepare. |
Thanks! I think I get the idea that the Cooper program is only for immersion kids. I didn't think about the controversial books in the library but I saw the article in the past. I still think they should have a place to explain school programs to prospective families. But it's just my opinion and has to be a different topic. I never thought about PTSA so I will look into the information about it and if I have further questions definitely seek their help. Nice to hear that there's someone who is happy with the pyramid. Thanks again! |
Yes no one who had or has children in fcps ever said a negative thing lol. |
You need a good number of active parents who have time during the school day to be able to have tours, staff have their jobs to do. Obviously FCPS broadly speaking can’t just offer tours. |
