Seems like a swell guy! Definitely worth valorizing over the people he oppressed.

Er, you think Columbus Day was about who the man was rather than the historical significance of what he did? No wonder you're so eager to change it.

What did he do, exactly? Please excuse my ignorance!

He discovered America /s

It was a discovery for the Europeans! You know, the ones that ultimately started the colonies which became the USA. Do you like living here in these Americas? Because though flat- earthers still exists, the majority of the world knows the earth is round because of Christopher Columbus' documentation and discoveries.

Also, please know that just like many civilizations, Indigenous people were no saints either. They fought and killed over land and committed many other atrocities just like the Romans, the barbarians, the chinese, african civilizations, the indians, and just about every civilization ever. So if CC can't be celebrated, then everyone is guilty. We should celebrate no one.

That's......fine. It's very weird for the US to have a federal holiday for this one European explorer.

"Columbus didn’t 'discover' America — he never set foot in North America. During four separate trips that started with the one in 1492, Columbus landed on various Caribbean islands that are now the Bahamas as well as the island later called Hispaniola. He also explored the Central and South American coasts. But he didn’t reach North America, which, of course, was already inhabited by Native Americans, and he never thought he had found a new continent."

"Columbus didn’t set out to prove the earth was round. Forget those myths perpetuated by everyone from Washington Irving to Bugs Bunny. There was no need for Columbus to debunk the flat-earthers—the ancient Greeks had already done so. As early as the sixth century B.C., the Greek mathematician Pythagoras surmised the world was round, and two centuries later Aristotle backed him up with astronomical observations. By 1492 most educated people knew the planet was not shaped like a pancake."

Maybe I was sick the day they taught history in history class, but haven't there been more than a few historical figures who never "fought and killed over land and committed many other atrocities"? Let's celebrate some of them instead! Not some greedy tyrant whose rule was so brutal and terrible that even Inquisition-era Spain stripped him of his governorship and had him arrested.

Don't bother - this thread is inhabited by people who are either shockingly ignorant or deliberately trolling, so there is no point in keeping it going.

It’s Columbus Day. Always has been. Always will be. Even if you call it something else we all know who discovered America.

I miss school lunch with the little boats on Columbus Day.

Did you miss the part where Columbus never set foot in North America, much less the USA?

“Always,” huh? Columbus Day wasn’t made a federal holiday until… let’s see here… 1968.

It's been Columbus day since Italian Americans became a powerful enough voting block to get a holiday- it only dates back to FDR as a federal holiday. But if you want to change it to Leif Erickson day or Beringia people's day, feel free

So many of you would do well by reading about the native tribes here prior to Columbus. I promise you it wasn't all roses. Columbus is just derided because he was better at killing than they were.

I don't think any state is making it Indigenous Peoples' Day to celebrate the native people as perfect. I think it's an alternative to lionizing Columbus without regard for his effect on the native peoples. I'd be just fine skipping that day as a holiday, myself.

Skip it in light of Juneteenth. I would be happy to do so and I say this as a 3rd generation (Italian) American.
