It can be hard to get on a team as an 8th grader. Coaches will have 'their" kids they coached for years and your kid has to be a LOT better to bump a long time player.

I would try out for both to maximize your son's chances.

My kid is trying out for a middle school travel team in Loudoun and they make u pay registration before you tryout, if you don’t make the travel team then they throw you in the rec league, and don’t want to refund if you don’t want to play rec.

Are there any non- Fycbl teams? Looking for something where you don't have to live in a specific zip code and looking for non-dad coaching. The dad coaches always seem to have kids that are not very good and then they pick their kid's friends for the team who also happen to not be that good.

Even in the scenario you describe, I have never not seen a clearly amazing player not be selected.

For kids on the bubble, tryout season can be brutal and it definitely can feel unfair when a "friend" gets a spot over your equally talented kid.

Yeah they are out there. How much are you trying to spend?
