If you don't care about keeping the dress, renting or borrowing one will give you a lot more options. Mine is just collecting dust in my basement, and I wish I had rented/borrowed one.

For buying, the best deals (outside of sales) are going to be non-wedding dresses with a bridal look to them.

Net-a-Porter —> dresses —> white You can select for size, length, sleeve, etc, too, obviously, and the prices can go from normalish to pretty expensive. If you find one you love you can have it tailored to be perfect for your body.

Or if you have a designer you like in “regular” clothes, hit the Real Real and see what they have.

Same. Mostly timeless styles in natural fabrics. I bet they're still available online if you look.
