How much is Queen E to blame for Britain's colonism, really?

There are 193 countries in the world, only 43 of which are some type of monarchy.

Overwhelmingly the world does not crave monarchy.

You did see every royal wedding they had signaled to literally every country, right? Not any other royal wedding except Monaco decades ago. Yes, the world tunes in to these guys.

I was at a lecture where the speaker began her talk by first acknowledging the tribe of native Americans who had lived in that region (Chesapeake Bay) before the (British) White Man came over the ocean and took their land. Then she gave her talk. Really? Does that make it OK? Are we all supposed to feel guilt because we own property, the deeds for which were set up by Lord Fairfax or another British colonist?

I think they are supported by the British public, who pays them. Does the British owe the apologies for decisions in the past?

And what country does not have dirty baggage somewhere in it's past?

I think we, as a culture here in the US, are culpable of serious misdeeds, past and present, and in the UK as well- but as a country, and individual actual leaders up to now. I don't see where one modern ceremonial monarch, who literally has no power, would be called a serial killer in the time she was queen . This isn't education. Lots of bandwagon commenting. Give the facts.

This. Kate and William were honestly shocked at the treatment they got when they went to the Caribbean. This tells us that they are out of touch with how problematic the Empire is/was. How could they be expected to be welcomed with open arms by countries where England subjugated and exploited the people?

I hesitate to waste energy posting because Jeff deleted many posts about this topic because of some 48 hour rule which prohibits any negative comments after a death (not clear if this rule applies to the death of terrorists and criminals?).

Some Americans are most do not care. It seems the same type of people who were crazy about the royal wedding are the same type who are all wrapped up in this. It’s people who like the Top Model, Project Run and the Kardashians. It’s the Princess fantasy crowd.

You realize that WE ALL benefitted from our grisly past. We are all benefiting right now-we exploit now .

But what did she do, singularly as queen to be called a serial killer?

+1
Conquering people is what countries have done for centuries. European colonization was one example of that - not the only time in history it happened. Acknowledge wrong doing, apologize and look forward. If you started trying to unravel and compensate all the wars and Conquering it would never stop.

I don’t know about you, but the Queen benefited a heck of a lot more from “our grisly past” than I have! She was literally one of the most privileged people in the world.

We don't know if they were shocked. The press said that. The press has a field day, liking or hating the royal family, and literally invents new about them. They weren't likely shocked.

If you have food, clothes, a car, a cell phone, yes, you are benefitting right now from a marginalized population, and amazingly so.
The royal family is funded by the British taxpayers, however odd that is, and their wealth is of course over the top, but not because she is a serial killer.

Oh, so they knew it was a bad idea to go to a former colony where England controlled the economy, sucked out all the resources and wealth they could, and sent it back to England? And yet they went anyway? That’s not really making them look better.

Other countries are streaming all this nonsense too. It's not just us. All over.

And you’ve not done your share of atoning for what you benefited.

Actually I was on the receiving end of the grisly past, hon. Much of my family died in pogroms and the Holocaust. My family didn’t come here until after WW2. Now you show your receipts. Who’s your family? How have you benefitted? Have you atoned sufficiently?
