Half a dozen bakery brownies taste like an ash tray — how?

It’s possible some plastic, non-oven safe material or cleaner residue burned in the oven while the brownies were baking. My MIL accidentally left plastic wrap on some frozen entree and it started smoking, ruining all the food in the oven.
