Now, that might be expected, but Geico took us on and gave us a very reasonable rate. I’m thinking I will look around again in a few years when DS’s record isn’t so fresh but the secret is: be a new customer. Take the teaser rate from anybody and then look around again a few years later.

What's a reasonable rate on a new driver? Because I'm expecting a few fender benders--especially with three new drivers.

I’m the PP. Our rate went from $200/ semi-annually to $200/month. After the accidents, USAA wanted $400/month. Geico gave us $250/month and we took it. Yes, I could throttle my kid for all of this but he is maturing and driving much slower and safer as I told him all privileges would be lost if we ended up having to pay more than this. Should caveat: these rates were not in the DMV area.

OP here. Woah. Is this NYC? Because doubling it its crazy. Our rate is currently $200 p/m for just DH and I we're 50+ and now here come our Gen y kids. One of them works so he can pay but the others are in college.

No. It’s the Boston exurbs. And MA has limits to what insurers can charge. $200/mo for just you and DH seems very high to me!!

Is someone active or recent vet military?

My father, vietnam vet, is my access to USAA. I got access switched to USAA and then was back at GEICO in two years.
A former colleague, who was a financial advisor for USAA for years, explained that the best services are for active and recent vets.
Because my father, a vietnam vet only and not otherwise commissioned, hadn’t had USAA while he was active he got some mid tier access, and I, his independent child only got the bottom tier of service.

I didn’t find their rates that much better.

I will echo another participant and say that when a USAA insured driver hit my car (while parked in front of my house), it was as easy as dealing with a car repair you had no fault in creating could be…

USAA changed their policy a few years ago. They used to never drop anyone as a result of claims (just increased your rate), and now they are pretty aggressive in dropping policies after claims.

I have also heard that recent vets are offered better rates. Their customer service is top notch though -- very responsive.
