Longtime GEICO customer here considering the switch to USAA

Anonymous
I am considering the switch from GEICO to USAA. I have been with GEICO for 40 years (ha), but am done with the rate hikes. Anyone with experience switching?

Have you compared rates? Is USAA actually cheaper?

I'm sure the OP switches over to a higher rate from USAA for the fun of it. /s

Man! We’ve ONLY had USAA; 37 years!
My family (including our 3 adult children) do not know any other insurance company for our needs🤣

That’s our family as well. My parents have had USAA forever. I am a 36 year USAA customer. My adult kids all use USAA. Banking, insurance, mortgage, ….. “USAA for life”.

I'm not impressed with USAA but too lazy to shop around. We haven't had any issues or claims but if it is something minor we wouldn't put in a claim as USAA has dropped friends/family for claims. We did USAA for our first mortgage and not impressed. They said they don't sell mortgages and they sold ours pretty quickly. Other banks like Chase have better credit card deals. I had USAA shut down my credit card over owing under $50 balance (I pay it off every month) and it was an entire drama. (it was really bizarre)

I was always told growing up that USAA was great, but my experience hasn't been that good (not that I have anything to compare it to).

OP here what sorts of not-that-good experiences have you had?

I know people who have been but we haven't filed claims for the minor things that happen so that helps. Just avoid filing claims for small stuff and you should be ok.

We were all USAA for everything but after DS had a couple
of minor fender-benders (yes, he went to remedial driving school and we put limits on his use of the vehicle!), they stuck it to us. Now, that might be expected, but Geico took us on and gave us a very reasonable rate. I’m thinking I will look around again in a few years when DS’s record isn’t so fresh but the secret is: be a new customer. Take the teaser rate from anybody and then look around again a few years later.

I wish I could get USAA. I am not qualified. OP, if you do, get it.

What's a reasonable rate on a new driver? Because I'm expecting a few fender benders--especially with three new drivers.

I’m the PP. Our rate went from $200/ semi-annually to $200/month. After the accidents, USAA wanted $400/month. Geico gave us $250/month and we took it. Yes, I could throttle my kid for all of this but he is maturing and driving much slower and safer as I told him all privileges would be lost if we ended up having to pay more than this. Should caveat: these rates were not in the DMV area.

I dealt with USAA from teh other side (non policy holder) -- a USAA insured driver hit us, and they were pretty easy to deal with.

But.. we have Geico and a Geico-insured driver hit us last year (yes, we're unlucky!) and Geico was pretty easy to deal with too.
