No one moves for that. They get tutors or private school. Sounds like you work or own ASDEC. You want OG for Dyslexia, not phonics. |
No you're just out here saying that mcps has no phonics curriculum when you don't even know what curriculum mcps is using because you left the district. My kid got a ton of phonics instruction last year in first grade. She was teaching me about diagraph and blends, which was very cool. |
You realize you got lucky that they had a teacher that knew to supplement the poor curriculum, right? |
Where did they learn phonics? |
So the other schools get nothing? Great. What phonics program should the rest of us use at home? |
According to the link above, elementary schools are all shifting to Structured Literacy, which includes phonics: "Structured literacy centers on the systematic and cumulative teaching of the five components of reading—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension as well as writing. This shift is supported by research on improving how MCPS teaches reading and writing." |
| Long left MCPS, but had a child go through 8th grade. I remember very clearly his Kindergarten orientation, where my son read a few pages to the teacher from a book. The teacher was intrigued and I told her the phonics based method I used to teach him. The teacher then proceeded to tell me, that's not the way to teach reading anymore...we don't teach phonics. Was so glad I had the foresight to do it myself. |
They always used phonics at our ES. Are you sure you know what you're talking about? |
Yes, not every kid learns that way. In fact, for me, phonics just slowed me down. Forcing it on me wasn't helpful. |
I can't believe our W feeder isn't on the list. Who can I call at the central office? |
Yeah my kid prefers to look at the pictures to figure out a word than have to sound it out. |
And what happens if there isn’t a relevant picture? |
Not at a W. I'm glad MCPS is finally shifting to structured literacy for the sake of my preschooler. But that doesn't help my 1st grader at a school relying solely on 1st gen benchmark. There is very little phonics in that, which is why MCPS is making changes. So again, what phonic program should I be using to supplement at home? |
I thought all schools are shifting to structured literacy for K-2. |
