| Title says it all…. |
| I thought a phonics curriculum was being added this year? I wouldn’t necessarily expect it in the first day but if this has been pulled back I will be mad. |
| Did MCPS backtrack on using Dibels? I saw on a recent MCPS newsletter that they're going to continue testing reading with MAP tests. |
| MCPS generally sucks at rolling out new curriculums. There is a ton of discussion from the principal about about how the curriculum team is preparing to put months into teacher training and preparing materials, then, aren't ready so teachers get a quickie training for a week in the summer and have to wait a couple of weeks into school for materials to start trickling to the schools. |
| School dependent. Many are rolling out Really Great Reading and moving to structured literacy. |
| OP, are you at a school that is piloting the "new and improved" Benchmark curriculum, or at one that is supposed to use Really Great Reading? Either way, you just inspired me to buy this book to help my kid learn to read this year in PK so we don't have to rely on MCPS. https://www.amazon.com/Teach-Your-Child-Read-Lessons/dp/0671631985 |
| OP here. No this was a PSA about MCPS. I am long out of the school district - moved because I could not support their lies anymore about dyslexia screening and phonics and OG training. But glad I was able to help someone. MCPS is a rotten to the core place on reading and basics so taking it on yourself is worth it. If you find your child is struggling even with phonics just go over to ASDEC in Rockville. Don’t waste time with MCPS - put in for an IEP of course but they will wait for the child to fail (3rd grade) before they do de minimus. Tell me how I know… |
So you are complaining about something you know nothing about what is currently going on. Got it. |
Dibels is an assessment tool, it's not a curriculum |
I don't suppose you work at ASDEC and are drumming up business for yourself? |
Comical! |
DP. How do we figure which of these is true of our elementary? |
| Op here. Ah enjoy throwing those stones at glass houses but if phonics were in the schools an MCPS employee would have been on here fast. Got it - no phonics. And no, I do not work for ASDEC. It’s just so funny that one of the most successful dyslexia training facilities is in Moco yet no MCPS teachers are ever sent there. |
| I have looked into ASDEC but it was just too expensive for me to justify paying out of pocket. Our school is planning on starting RGR mid September but teachers haven’t received materials. Excited because as a teacher I have been pushing SoR for so long but other teachers at my school have yet to be trained. I paid for RGR training out of pocket several years ago, also bought the materials kit long before MCPS was interested in RGR beyond SpEd. I do like RGR and feel it is very user friendly. |
So, what is your point! Not all kids do well with phonics. Mine did not. |
