Why do some elementary schools start later?

They did this in Anne Arundel County now!

MCPS is just too big and it’s too logistically challenging to shift the start times, unfortunately.

Ok but it's not like Anne Arundel is that small either- it has 80k students. Seems like there is some potential for lessons learned.

My kids' school (elementary) in PG Co. starts at 7:45, and ends at 1:55, but other PG Co. schools have different start times. I'm dreading the first day/week back, as we have been on vacation all summer and they are used to sleeping in late...

Because the biorhythms of younger children require it.

At least in MoCo, young kids can get a good night's sleep, unlike neighboring districts that adopt these inhuman policies.

Certianly not. Biorhythms are longer than daily cycles. There's good academic literature showing that ES kids' circadian rhythms would benefit from earlier starts, while HS kids's circadian rhythms would benefit from later start times. (And, no, it's not just lazy teens or teens staying up too late.)

It would benefit lazy overprivileged kids. It would be a disaster for hard working high schoolers who do EC's and those who need to earn money to contribute for their families or their own college or care for siblings.

Somehow HS students manage to do this in areas with later start times. And yeah, the fact that you pin this on "lazy" kids means you are not up to speed on the current research. Bye!

For some sports like swim we have it at 3:45 so how would that work. There are not enough pools in the county. You want them to switch the es kids to the early start time! How would they get there. Many kids are in before and after school care so the start time does not matter. For us there are 7-8 classes, plus school activities plus hours of homework. If they get out at 4 that would not work.

If you push back high school start times the kids go to bed later to fit it all in.

I remember HS jobs keeping kids past 10 pm when I was growing up. It’s pretty rough to then get up at dawn.

When the HS parents pushed through later start times, it pushed back the Tier 2 ES to unacceptably late schedules. For Kensington Parkwood, it also meant parents could no longer commute by MARC train after drop off, killing off the best walkable public transport option to downtown.

Not allowed now according to the work permit laws.

3:50 is an absurd time for elementary students to be dismissed. This should be changed ASAP. Everyone from back home I've spoken to about this is appalled at how late that is.

ES and HS should switch start times. Better for both ages.

My 1st grader is up by 630am every day. Sounds like your kids would need to go to bed earlier if they couldn't manage this start time.

DP

Umm, actually not at all. I know it’s super trendy and edgy to bash America on this message board.

But, if it really was sports >>> education, then we would have more pools so the poor kids wouldn’t have to practice at 3:45am. We would acknowledge that we need more facilities for all sports (swimming, baseball, soccer).
