Because it's cheaper for teachers to live elsewhere?

My youngest DC is at Rachel Carson so ok, probably considered a "good" school.
My oldest is at South Lakes.... which, based on the other thread probably is not considered a "good" school (we are zoned for Westfield HS a "good" school maybe - but pupil placed to South Lakes for the IB program).

South Lakes is considered a "good" school. It's roughly in the center in terms of SAT and other metrics among the FCPS high schools--and the FCPS high schools as a whole are considered good.

The SAT scores are solid and the IB program is good yet you see threads with people wondering about SLHA all the time. There is one going right now. The reality is that SLHS has a higher FARMS rate and a good number of ESOL students so the test scores don't stand out. Not to mention, many of the kids at SLHS are solidly MC and not attending the top ranked schools potentially because they cannot afford them and they cannot get merit aid. People view it differently then McLean, Langley, Chantilly, and Oakton or even Robinson.

We still have 5 upper elementary “vacancies” at my school, but there are temporary teachers in every class. So to a parent viewing a schedule, all positions appear filled.

Zero vacancies for my kids’ classes at MS and HS.

Same. I work at the school and while happy emails get sent out “finally found teachers for this and that grade” the emails always fail to mention that these are filled by long-term subs…

Wrong assumption. Our Title 1 school has been fully staffed all summer.

I mean..."fully staffed" doesn't mean it's by qualified individuals. I know one school where they're using a gen Ed teacher with no sped endorsement to teach special ed classes and handing her caseload to all the licensed sped teachers since she's not trained or allowed to do the paperwork. This is a new practice nationwide and is horrible for our students. But they'll say they're "fully staffed" simply because there's a warm body in the classroom.

Lorton Station has six vacancies listed today, for teachers, and one IA opening. Last year, an IA taught a fifth grade class for 3/4 of the year.

+ 1 - our Title I ES had very few teachers leave and fully staffed early in the summer. -

PP - don't know why you would make that assumption - many teachers are intrinsically motivated to work in high FARMs schools, while others prefer high SES schools - different experiences - same way some teachers want to teach AAP, while others run away from it. Absolutely agree with your point about bad admin though - this is typically the factor that drives satisfaction/vacancies.

None of the teachers at my Title 1 school wanted to work there when they were originally hired but we’ve all come to love it there. We rarely have vacancies except for this year.

My high schooler has 2 vacant spots on schedule and we are at a pretty good high school.
