Thanks again for the local perspective. I was under the impression Newport area was conservative but now it seems like that’s not a well defined term. Can someone describe the typical Newport conservative to me then?

The further south in OC you go, the more conservative it will be. San Clemente might be a good fit.

South part of Orange County and much of San Diego County are very conservative. The public schools there reflect the conservative values of the neighborhoods generally speaking.

No part of Southern California is socially conservative. Pretty much everyone, including the most conservative politicians, are pro-choice, pro gay marriage, pro equality. This is California! Newport Beach is relatively progressive.

Honestly, you will not be happy in California.

Not really. San Diego has a huge youth culture due to the universities. No one is a social conservative. It’s not Florida and “don’t say gay”.

North San Diego County along the coast and inland is very conservative. The City of San Diego itself had a moderate republican mayor very recently, and historically has been republican leaning. Not sure if that’s changing. Outpost Rd area is very hip and leans liberal I think. But the Filipino population in Mira Mesa seems to be moderate to conservative. La Jolla should still be conservative. Hillcrest and North Park are quite liberal. Del Mar is probably a healthy mix of liberal, moderate, and conservative. Etc.

Thanks all! Great info.

Further inland in Orange County, Tustin, and Villa Park especially, have been very conservative enclaves. The public schools there also lean conservative. Conservative Chapman University is close by.

OP I'm a DC native, fellow Catholic now living in south Orange County not too far from Newport Beach. Look at Our Lady Queen of Angels. Has a great reputation.

Hi! Thanks for writing. I fell in love with Newport after a few short hours. Feeling like the DMV is getting too crazy for me. (It feels as though the population became ultra progressive overnight.) How would you say living in Newport is vs DC socially? As liberal or more conservative? Do you feel challenged intellectually, or do you ever feel bored? I love the coast line and the hills, but I am not used to so much sprawl having been in MD suburbs for 30+ years. Looking for a quiet, wholesome place to raise my kids, away from the noise of the ultra left. Is it possible to achieve there, or is it just a fantasy of mine? Thanks.

We would be leaving our local parish school that is under the direction of the Archdiocese of Washington, which is pretty middle of the road, although left-leaning. We prefer a more conservative outlook, similar to that of our neighboring VA archdiocese (ie the Archdioceses of Arlington) as we are fairly socially-conservative. I worry public may not be an option for us for this reason.

Our Lady Queen of Angels is catholic (with a small c meaning all-embracing) but there are enough right wing jerks in Orange County for you to feel more comfortable in public school.

Well, aren't you an open minded bigot? I grew up there. It once was a beautiful republican oasis now destroyed by irresponsible liberal policies so all the good aspects are gone (along with the good companies and jobs) but by all means spew hatred.

PP here. I've always been politically moderate, pretty much down the middle. The population in Newport is more conservative than lets say Costa Mesa, or Laguna Beach, but there is a good mix here, and you'll be very happy here and fit right in.... mostly because folks here are accepting of everyone and politics are not at top of everyone's conversation day in and day out. No one cares who you vote for, and very few people discuss such things. Life here is about being outside, on the beach, hiking, and just enjoying life and the passage of time. Now I will say that there is a lack of museums like what you have in DC. As I said I am a DC native and we went to the Smithsonian almost every weekend when I was a kid, and as an adult I still enjoyed doing that well into my early 40's until we moved here. So that is the one thing I miss - but you can't have it all. And not that we don't have those types of educational opportunities, they're just not The Kennedy Center, National Portrait Gallery, Hirshhorn etc. you get the picture. If you want that, you just go to LA for the day.

We’re all glad you moved. Newport Beach is great!

+1. Even Conservatives in California are liberal by DC standards. It’s the culture of California. Conservatives here are definitely pro-choice, pro-gay marriage and need the immigrant workers too much to kick up a fuss.

The PP is correct - OP will not be happy here. California isn’t Florida.
