Why do nail salons bother letting customers make appts?

I go during the weekdays and do a walk in. I'd never dream of going on weekend when most people are off.

Tipping well has absolutely no effect, salons of the strip mall caliber only accept appointments to placate clients. You need to pay more for your service and find a salon that is appointment only

Not true at all. Every place is different. The woman that does my nails at my not high end nail salon is better than any of the higher end places I have been to. I tip her well and definitely have my appointment times met. Also if I walk in without an appointment, she discreetly bumps me to the front. If there is no-one waiting or a scheduled appointment right after me, she will provided extended/additional services at no charge.
