Yes but if they've been doing it in school for over a decade, they need to try new things.

Do kids that love sports have to give them up too..to try new things?

For years, they have been the scout. As they’ve progressed in scouting they’ve been given more responsibility. Now as a young adult, they can continue in scouting as a leader or a volunteer at the council level. I don’t know why anyone would need to give it up to try new things. Volunteering takes a few hours most weeks, sometimes more if there is an event or overnight occurring. Not sure why you could do both a paid internship or academic research AND volunteer. Isn’t that what most adults do when they want to volunteer—they go to work and volunteer in their free time.

I would think it is weird

Volunteering in youth activities as an adult is weird? So many of them rely on volunteers...

There is so much out there in the world to learn, to enjoy, to excel at, to explore, scouting is great but after high school, its time to move on.

Because no one would have an opportunity to learn, explore, enjoy, or excel by being a scout leader...thanks for letting us know (that you do not know anything about scouting)

I imagine a scout could work at any one of the many scout camps across the country. My neighbor's son took a gap year after HS and worked at Philmont - both during the summer and in the off season. Life changing experience.

What is wrong with you? Becoming an Eagle Scout or Gold Award recipient is a lifetime achievement. You are always an Eagle Scout, just like you are always a Marine. Every year the Dean of Harvard Law School sends me and all other graduates a list of the accomplishments of the incoming law class and the number of Eagle Scouts is always listed.

That wasn't implied. By 18 there are ways to do all these things that aren't stunted.

Limited learning and growth. You'll be better off getting out of that bubble you've been since you were a Cub Scout.

It is an accomplishment for a high schooler. Once you are in college, there is a whole lot more to learn and try.

My Eagle Scout is off to college in the fall. His school has a Venture crew. Will he join? I don't know. Will he want to go on hunts or backpacking trips? Absolutely!
