There were so many things about the 2nd episode that broke my brain. Layers upon layers of weirdness! Did anyone else catch that when the lady was whisper-praying on the couch, she seemed to be quietly seething? There was something about the tightness in her voice and the way she emphasized the words. I’ve been obsessed with wondering what the backstory was to that anger. Doubt we’ll ever find out, as viewers, and I’m not sure why I even care. Guess it’s because the woman’s personality feels like a puzzle I e failed to solve, and that bit feels like a clue. |
I am a Christian and I don’t pray out loud unless I am with someone else, so she was obviously trying to “deliver a message” to the production staff, including Fielder. My mother would do something like this, and my mother is pretty crazy. Watching Angela was a little triggering for me, which is one of the reasons Fielder’s shows are so much more than what they seem to be. I felt bad for her being single at 44 but also recognized that she was a total weirdo. I also saw a lot of what I see in devout, perpetually single women who expect red blooded American men to tell them what they want to hear. It was all just very painful to watch. |
You guys we need to talk about episode 5. It was all just so completely batshit insane and I love it so much and I love Nathan Fielder so much. |
I thought I was the only person who loved Nathan. The show is incredible & thought provoking & so hard to even explain. |
I hated The Rehearsal and stopped watching after two episodes. Nathan comes off as so condescending and I felt bad for the people he used in the show. Even though they agreed to it, I feel like they were likely unaware how pathetic they look. It just all felt gross to me. |
I think it is worth it to return and watch until episode 5, when the craziness of the concept seem to crescendo, even if you are only hate watching. Or actually just watch episode 5, since you have seen episode 2. It is one of the craziest episodes of television that I have ever seen in my entire life. Moreover there are so many themes and layers and it directly deals with Nathan is just cruel and is just worth watching. |
*with whether Nathan is just a cruel puppetmaster |
I thought episode 4 was even crazier — one of the most baffling and brilliant things I’ve ever watched
In episode 5, when the fake Angela was berating him for being a liar, I suspect that the scene was pre-scripted or at least shaped by an earlier conversation. The actress was so good at channeling Angela’s passive-aggressive vagueness before that point, and it seemed unlikely to me that she would make such an abrupt tonal change (while also cutting so perceptively right to Nathan’s own psychological issues). If true, that would make the speech into Nathan criticizing his own personality and actions, which I find even more fascinating. |
Omg - we need to talk about Episode 6!!!! |
Is this just Nathan sockpuppeting? This show is not that good and it’s confusing. Who is an actor? |
What’s your interpretation of his final sentence? |
Uh, that’s the entire point. Anyways, this show is crazy brilliant. I doubt they make a second season of it. It feels like a stand alone series. |
I haven't seen the shows. I have heard comedians say how brilliant these shows are, and I have read articles about them, and I still don't get it. Not sure what is wrong with me. haha
Can someone try to explain the premise? |
I totally get why Nathan seems like he could be on the spectrum (monotone voice, social awkwardness, saying things nobody else would say, seeming cluelessness, fixations on things, seemingly rigid), but I don’t think anyone actually on the spectrum could make these shows. He has keen insight into emotions and communication and how to manipulate people. He knows exactly where the line is and makies sure he stays on the wrong side of it. He isn’t oblivious to awkward moments; he relishes in them because they make people cringe. I watch with my 14 year old, and her favorite parts are those very rare moments where somebody says something so crazy that Nathan breaks character for just a moment and utters, “What?!” with genuine surprise in his voice. |
hhaha like when the guy made the Jew joke at the restaurant. |
