I have experienced exactly what you are describing, and am still experiencing it 22 years later, from my children, but it was a do or die situation and my ex-husband had all the money and the power and he got custody because I had to leave to get away from him, and I could not take my children with me. And no one would help me because it was a religious southern county where divorce is considered the ultimate sin and you are supposed to be meek and submissive and a compliant wife, and I could not do it. My mother controlled the opinions, and still does, so I am a thousand miles away and free, but I will pay forever. I got myself on my feet and I spent years raising my children whenever I could get them, I had strict visitation rights because the courts deemed me a bad mother, and I proved to them the kind of mother I am and we had fun and laughed and played and I love my children so...., and still the poison from their dad and from his second wife and her kids and from my mother and the church permeated everything. My prayers, OP.

This is exactly the right word. I'm sorry you went through all that.
