Did my father catch C-Diff on vacation in Mexico or just a coincidence?

Bleach works. Depending on what the “disinfectant” is it may not. Check online for dilution strength on bleach.

How long from contact to symptoms?

I had it after a vacation. I was given antibiotics and no one else in the family was infected. Just wash your hands.

He is not and was not on any antibiotic, which apparently can trigger a C-Diff infection in seniors. So I'm unsure how he "caught" it. He is the only one with this illness.

My friend got it in the hospital after being admitted for a fall. All visitors had to wear a surgical gown and plastic hair net to avoid getting it ourselves.

I almost died from it. Is he immunocompromised? I was from prednisone.

If it's transmitted via fecal matter, isn't the most logical place it's caught in a rest room -- either from the toilet bowl or toilet handle or bathroom sink or door knob?

Why does it matter where he got it? Did his doctor or nurse give protocols for minimizing spread once home?

And many men are not good about washing hands after #1.

Yes, that's how it's transmitted.

It also lives in soil and mulch. Handwashing after gardening is important. But this also means you could get it from almost any raw produce.

Use soap for handwashing; hand sanitizer does not kill c. diff (or norovirus).

Wow! How is it in soil?!! My grandmother randomly got c-diff a couple of years ago. She's a big gardener and come to think of it, got it after spring gardening. First I have ever heard it could be caught from soil.

I’m not sure what you mean by “how”. It’s a spore-forming bacteria, meaning that when it’s in hostile conditions it reverts to a less active state and then reactivates when it’s on hospitable turf again. That could be a lot of places; dirt seems like kind of an obvious possibility (and sure enough, c. diff does live in dirt).

Must people get it in the hospital

I caught it in the early covid days when I was working from home and no one was going anywhere. Who knows how. All I can think of was a quick trip to the grocery store because I wasn’t going anywhere. No one else in my family had it. It took months to clear and a few different medicines. It was really serious. I’m sorry your father is going through this and am glad he is getting treatment. I hope he has an easy recovery.

Purell and alcohol sanitizers don't usually kill cdiff. Most people aren't going to get it unless theyre also on antibiotics for some reason and it kills all their natural gut bacteria and the cdiff takes over.
