Can someone explain how it's contagious? As in, it's from traces of a person's fecal matter, right? So like unwashed or poorly washed hands after a bowel movement and then they touch common areas and/or prepare food?
Yes, that's how it's transmitted.
It also lives in soil and mulch. Handwashing after gardening is important. But this also means you could get it from almost any raw produce. Use soap for handwashing; hand sanitizer does not kill c. diff (or norovirus).
Wow! How is it in soil?!! My grandmother randomly got c-diff a couple of years ago. She's a big gardener and come to think of it, got it after spring gardening. First I have ever heard it could be caught from soil.
I’m not sure what you mean by “how”. It’s a spore-forming bacteria, meaning that when it’s in hostile conditions it reverts to a less active state and then reactivates when it’s on hospitable turf again. That could be a lot of places; dirt seems like kind of an obvious possibility (and sure enough, c. diff does live in dirt).
