3.75/1550 Big 3 rising Senior - College Options?

I am confused - you have a rising senior at a Big 3 and you do not have a list for schools yet?

I thought most Big 3 students were knocking out application essays over the summer.

+1. With those stats and school, I have a feeling you already have a list of schools and are merely looking for affirmation.

NP. I have a rising senior at a big 3 who is still figuring out where to apply and we plan to visit additional colleges this summer/fall. Some apps may be completed in August, but not all (hope DC will have the common app essay done, but no guarantees). OP's post seems believable to me.

I'm another Big3 parent and this list doesn't make ANY sense at all. My kid who wants a large public university has zero interest in attending a SLAC.

You have to ask college counselor what is reasonable. My rising senior at DC private has met with counselor numerous times as have parents. Is that not the norm at other schools?? I'm confused

"Still figuring out" and "plan to visit additional colleges" are the operative terms here. The OP seems to be saying that they don't have a list and haven't met with the college counselor. That seems unrealistic for a big 3 student - different story entirely for public school student.

Your comment about seeing the counselor later this year has me confused. This should already be done. What schools have you visited and liked? Is there any financial restrictions?

Wherever she wants. If you’re real, you know this already.

NP. My junior can use this advice. Thank you!

Does your child have any idea what they want to study or how they want to study it? They will be competitive at many schools but it seems like they need to figure out fit before you start a list.

OP again. Of course, DC has already met with the college counselor at school and has discussed some college options. TBH the conversation with the college counselor apparently had a "soft-focus" feel to it. Perhaps this is because DC is not an ultra top student (3.95 + GPA, for whom super top schools are very likely) nor in the GPA range where T20 schools/lower Ivies etc are completely out of the realm of possibility. Further, counselor admitted to some further degree fo lack of clarity given test optionality, changing landscape of college admissions etc and the resulting fuzziness around all this that has developed over the last two years.

Asking DCUMers now bc DC is finally armed with the Junior year GPA and SAT score. Unfortunately, DC is not too clear about preference re location/type of Univ etc (and this undoubtedly made the counselors job in advising DC difficult too).

And thanks to other rising senior parents for reminding me of the urgency of stuff that needs to get done over the summer!! Close to a minor panic right now!

That is bad advice, though? Don’t apply to all of those because they’re completely different. But visit all those varieties to get a sense of what your kid wants.

I guess not "Big 3," but Potomac parent here with rising senior. Though kid has met with college counselor, parents have not and probably won't, considering requested emails to set up said meeting have been completely ignored. Clicked through to kid's Naviance and was horrified at the schools the counselor put in. Honestly, just can't face this process. Didn't really for older kids until late summer and all worked out fine. Not everybody is as intense and insane as DCUM would lead you to believe. In any event, OP, you now full well that your kid is a top applicant. Why do you need to come here with this question?
