Daily Harvest PSA- lentil crumbles likely putting some in hospital

+1 This thread is the first I’m hearing of it.

The most recent reddit post (I’m not really “on” reddit so I don’t know how much that fluctuates/is dependent on one’s own algorithms) says that someone from the FDA came and retrieved their bag of crumbles.

Holy haddock, that company is done.

This is a PR nightmare and Daily Harvest is handling it extremely poorly.

Last I checked they still had all the Instagram posts promoting this product up and just added “important info about the crumbles link in bio” to the captions. They’re trying really hard to pin this on the consumer undercooking the lentils. One serving of undercooked lentils doesn’t give thousands of people liver enzymes so high some of them get their gallbladders removed.

Forbes just had an article on the founder. With all her money, you'd think she would have hired someone to help her figure this out.

I just posted, but wow the timing is strange. You don't think some deranged person tried to sabotage her business by potentially poisoning people do you? I know-major conspiracy theory, but she was on top of the world and now her business is trash.

They finally added potential liver function issues to the GI issues. 470 reports of this, geez.

I wonder if a pesticide on one of the ingredients could have caused this?

“ As classmates gave politically correct answers like “doing good” or “solving needs,” Drori responded honestly: “To make money.” A business can’t do any good, Drori says, if it doesn’t make money.”

And WTF are protein crumbles?

Why are people excited about FROZEN food delivered? It’s so wasteful to ship onsey twosies frozen items. Hello Fresh etc at least was fresh produce not TJ knockoffs

They use cassava flour; if that is improperly handled it contains cyanide. Wonder if that’s the actual issue?

That could be.

There is like nothing easier and cheaper to cook at home than lentils. Why on earth do you have to buy this processed lentil garbage? Just eat real food.

Yes, people are hypocritical. They consider themselves both health food lovers and lovers of the environment and then order these services that waste fuel and packaging. I suspect DH was healthier than TJ foods, but anytime you go chopping fruits and vegetables and not eating them right away you increase the chance of bacteria being an issue. Even though it's overpriced I see the appeal. I eat mostly whole foods only and food prep, even for a simple smoothie can get tiresome and I get sick of prepping in advance.I looked into DH at one point, but the reviews of actual dishes weren't great and it was so much cheaper to make food myself, even now that avocados are so expensive.

I will say if I got lentil crumbles as a free promotion and was starving, it would have to say in HUGE letters "cook first" or I'd assume it was some sort of snacky treat. I know people who cooked them got sick though. Also, I always check internal temperature of meat and poultry when cooking, but never beans.

It's amazing to me this situation hasn't been in the headlines more, but with everything going on in the US right now, I guess it's getting overshadowed.

In any case, I think the answer to this mystery is aflatoxins, which are "various poisonous carcinogens and mutagens that are produced by certain molds, particularly Aspergillus species."

More: Aflatoxins can occur in foods such as groundnuts, tree nuts, maize, rice, figs and other dried foods, spices, crude vegetable oils and cocoa beans, as a result of fungal contamination before and after harvest. Several types of aflatoxins are produced naturally.

And more: Aflatoxin toxicity has been well established in both humans and animals. Aflatoxin exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, convulsions acutely, and its chronic exposure can also lead to various complications like hepatotoxicity*, immunotoxicity, and teratogenicity.

*i.e., severe liver problems
