Is it safe to walk around downtown Chicago during the day?

Where were you, crazy person? I always felt so much safer living in Chicago than I did in DC. I lived in Ukrainian Village before it was gentrified and Logan Circle before it was gentrified. Logan Circle was way, way, way sketchier.

Recent assaults, shootings, etc. in touristy areas fwiw.

Just be very aware of your surroundings. Walk near buildings so you can duck inside if necessary.

Did you live in Chicago post-covid under the current mayor? Crime is dramatically worse and in downtown tourist areas.
