Is it safe to walk around downtown Chicago during the day?

I've never been there so don't jump down my throat. My hotel is near the Wrigley Building. Is it safe to walk to Navy Pier, the Art Institute, etc by myself during the daytime?

Probably about as safe as NYC right now. Take that for whatever it means.

It's completely safe. Or, at least as safe as anywhere else in a nation that allows virtually unfettered access to guns.

Okay. Thanks. I feel pretty safe walking around there during the day.

I once saw one homeless guy rob another at razor point in broad daylight in chicago. Right downtown in the Loop under the Chicago theater sign at the close of business around 430 pm on a weekday. Tons of commuters and tourists all around, nobody seemed to notice or care.

NP this. Like, what lol

Yes, it’s safe. Be aware but 99% of crime is committed on the South or West sides.

Racist.
Crime happens all over Chicago. Watch out for bump n’ grab pickpockets and scissor snatches of purses.

So glad I moved the hell outta there. DC feels safer to me.

Only during the day and only in the tourist areas

And I was robbed at gun point on my front porch in Chevy Chase DC a week after I moved here. It took 45 minutes for the police to arrive and then he chuckled and said “welcome to DC, my wife sleeps with a gun next to the bed.”

There’s crime everywhere and it’s getting worse. You’ll be fine in downtown Chicago. It’s my hometown and a fabulous city.

I love Chicago. But I’m going to be the outlier and say no. It’s not a safe city. I’ve always felt safe in DC and in NYC. I saw more violence in Chicago in two weeks then I’ve seen in my many years in DC and NYC. It does not feel safe at all to me.

Some PPs are bonkers.

It's extremely safe at all the places you noted especially during the day. I have lived in Chicago for 33 years and witnessed exactly once crime- a pick pocket. I have worked downtown every day for the last 18 years, commute alone, walk around during lunch and after work (I'm a female). Enjoy the beauty we have to offer! (and skip navy pier- there's really nothing there)

I work in downtown Chicago and have done so for nearly 15 years. I've never (knock on wood) witnessed crime. I currently don't go into the city everyday, but when I do, I have a mile walk each way from my (free) downtown parking spot. I try to stay aware of my surroundings, but that's about it.

I was far more concerned living in Shaw circa 2007. Gun shots, folks urinating on the side of my row house, etc. And FAR more property crime in my Dupont/Kalorama homes than I experienced in my Chicago neighborhoods (none).

There is crime in Chicago, but random violent crime isn't common downtown.
