OR, closer to a Kennedy than a Bush. My grandmother was good friends with JFK and my dad was close with RFK. All long before my existence. |
| I only visit the Hamptons or is it in Montauk? When I watch the bravo TV show Summer House. And what you describe, is an accurate description of the cast members of that show. |

Montauk is almost the worst now! It is crazytown with hordes of these young 20/30 year olds who literally all look alike taking selfies at every corner. And the "older" people that are there all try to dress and act like they are 20, so yeah, its pretty bad.
It used to be a lot of families, and laid back town people...no more! The locals are in an uproar over whats happened to their charming little beach oasis. It has been ruined as has much of the Hamptons. Give me Nantucket or Block Island any day. |

This is funny! I grew up going to the Hamptons in the 70s and early 80s and thought you and your friends ruined it at the turn of the millennium!
|
| The Hamptons stretch about 50 miles and the further East you go the glitzier it gets. Westhampton and Quogue are very nice. |
| That is so sad. I used to visit the Hamptons during my college summers. It was a beautiful special place. Influencers suck. |
|
Unfortunately every town except Quoge IMO has crossed over to the dark side. It is almost comical to see the parade of fancy cars (with tops down of course) with silver haired men thinking they are a young Tom Selleck and their overly botoxed wives with arms the size of a twizzler and of course the must have blonde hair that looks like broomsticks.
Them and the 20 year old "influencers" (how I loathe that word) make for quite a scene. Getting in to the most popular restaurant is like trying to garner a visit to the White House. ABSURD. We refuse to play into that nonsense, it is such a shame because East Hampton and Southampton are such wonderful towns with an old fashioned vibe and sadly, most of the people just ruin it. |

The fact that you said “cringe” when describing these people you have such disdain for is delightfully ironic. |
God forbid young people act young.

Apparently, you’re not alone, OP.
It would be interesting to know if this is just a Hamptons phenomenon or whether other high end resort areas are seeing a slow down. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/05/30/hamptons-summer-rental-market-beach-house-inventory-is-up-prices-are-down.html?__source=sharebar|twitter&par=sharebar After two years of strong demand and soaring prices, the supply of rentals in the Hamptons is surging, leading to a wave of last-minute price cuts. Median rental prices in the first quarter fell 26%, according to Jonathan Miller, CEO of Miller Samuel. Brokers say some owners are slashing prices by 30% or more just to fill their properties. “There is a tremendous amount of inventory and people are not renting it,” said Enzo Morabito of Douglas Elliman. “And it’s across all segments, from the very low to the very top of the market.” The weakness marks a dramatic and rapid reversal for one of the country’s highest-priced and most sought-after real-estate markets. In 2020 and 2021, renters were scrambling to find summer rentals and paying record prices months before the season for fear of missing out. Now, brokers say there are hundreds of rentals still available for the summer. |
Needless snark but I think basically that’s true- there are lots of places I enjoyed as a young person that i don’t enjoy in my fifties……. Different vibes for different seasons. And places do change, always been that way. |
To be fair here, when we used to go every summer about 10 years ago it just felt much more family friendly. I see way less families out and about and it feels taken over by these millennial hipsters. It has gotten very young, not saying its a bad thing but I think also the fact that its young and populated by a really "affected" group just makes it hard to stomach. There has been a huge change and it's widely documented. My friends father owns a huge property in Montauk and is a lifelong full time resident. He heads a local group that was responsible for not allowing Uber to take these kids into Montauk (one summer, don't think its still in effect) among other things as residents were so outraged by the hostile takeover of their once laid back little town. Just sad to see that happen. |

I’m confused but what about having the young people makes it not laid back or any less of a tourist destination?
Do they feel the new visitors don’t have money? What’s at the heart of making it less laid back? If the businesses are providing services and people are helping the local economy, isn’t that positive? |
