Correct. Moreland is intense but paid for and the quickest way, some opt to just get their masters in education over 2 or so years with mcps reimbursing some but not all, but then you don't have to worry about it later and you're in the next salary lane. A word to the wise, reddit is better for employment advice, this site is filled with really bitter people for the most part. |
Thanks! I will look to Reddit more in the future. But you have been really helpful. So if you are still there, one more question: do I have to apply for the conditional license before I apply for positions? It sounds like the answer is “no” but just want to clarify….. |
| You need the job first and MCPS provides the conditional certification. |
Thank you! |
Yes make a portal account, upload everything, consistently follow up, get your pre screening in and they will help you with the rest. |
| These teachers are super bitter after being chewed up and spit out of the mcps system with their career in shambles bc mcps didnt want to address violence and it was easier to just blame new teachers. |
| If you are willing to become a special education teacher, MCPS is desperate for more special education teachers. But be careful as there is a reason for the shortage. The job has become 70% paperwork and meetings and maybe 30% working directly with kids. And you need to have a very kind and patient personality to be good at it |
|
Thanks for this information. I would love to become a special education teacher - I really love those kids and want to help. And yes, I know it is a ton of paperwork (good at bureaucracy) and also they can never do as much as would be good.
But when I look at the jobs on the website, all the special education jobs require a lot more experience/credentials than the regular jobs? So....that doesn't seem like a good way to enter the system? |
They are desperate because it's a burn out job. They'd probably be willing to make a deal with you just to fill the job. |
| Let those crappy admin manipulate the paperwork themselves. I say no mas teaching until admin protects teachers from violence instead of retaliating on them. |
| It is possible that you would need to enter as a special education para and then complete the 2 year online JHU masters to get certified as a special education teacher. MCPS pays for the masters. I believe you can do it in the evenings and it is mostly online. |
This isn't true. Don't answer questions if you don't know the answer. This is a terrible career plan. They can start teaching sped right away, OP just work with HR they'll help. |
|
As if the morale and devaluation of our most important resources-real teachers- could be anymore disgraced

This is DCUM, where 90% of responders have no clues of what they are talking about and/or are trolling. |
| Hi! I know MCPS offers a conditional certification if you are working as a paraeducator! |
