ParentVue Complaint

I cannot understand why ParentVue does not have a checkmark or another symbol to show when students have completed and turned in an assignment. It’s infuriating that I can’t see when my son has turned in assignments. Is there anyone that we can contact to have this issue solved?

The parent interfaces for both synergy and Canvas are very hard to use. Get your child's username and password and check under their name. That's where you can see all of the information.

It's easier to tell at a glance if you use the ParentVue website instead of the app. The website view of the gradebook will have "0 Missing Assignments" or "1 Missing Assignment" right next to each class.

This isn't always accurate. Sometimes it says 0 missing assignments and then if you open up the class there are a bunch of ones with 50% credit which is what teachers have to do when things not turned in.

I'm told the teachers have to manually sync Canvas to ParentVue/StudentVue, so the accuracy of those sites depends upon how frequently the teacher has synced with Canvas.

In my experience, it has been accurate. The 50% credits have consistently had the Missing tag there, so it's been easy to find them.

If you find an assignment given 50% but not marked missing, then your student missed both the due date and the deadline and may not turn in the work anymore, (or they did really poorly and didn't earn above a 50%). The "missing" tag (old "Z" tag) means that it will still be accepted.

This is definitely not true for all classes for my two kids (two different schools). There really is no consistency across classes -- you need to know what each teacher uses for assignments (some platforms synch and some do not). The only way to really know is to go through each class separately in both parentvue and canvas, and sometimes you can only do it through the child's account if they are doing a lot of things on google rather than on canvas. It's quite cumbersome.

This isn't correct at our school. The biggest issue in all of this is that teachers have all come up with their own rules and ways of handling Canvas. I have a kid who is terrible with homework and it is a normal occurrence to turn in assignments after there is a 50% in Synergy (sometimes it says missing, sometimes it doesn't). In fact, once I contacted the teacher saying I was going to punish the kid for late work but wanted to understand if there were special circumstances or they'd worked something out, and the teacher replied that my kid was doing just fine and completely on track.... apparently, most of the kids turn stuff in late and she only cares if it's in by interims/end of semester.

So how do I punish a kid for irresponsible behavior if the teacher is saying that the deadlines aren't real deadlines and everyone has til interims to submit everything??

On the other hand, the kid has another teacher who won't accept anything even a minute late. I've literally looked at the timestamp in Canvas and it was 3 minutes past the due date and remained a 50% forever (kid said they weren't allowed to submit after that).

My wish for mcps isn't a new Parentvue system, but rather that all teachers have exactly the same policies and convey grades and performance in exactly the same way (with timely grading).

^This.
Some school administrators enforce that teachers do things a certain way but others are lazy and do not.
I don't know why the lazy ones can't do better at making sure the teachers are consistent in their use of the technology.
DD looked like she was doing well but it turned out her teacher never puts assignments into Canvas or Parentvue and then did it all the weekend grades were due and her A grade with no missing assignments went to an E with 8 missing assignments. True story.

It’s a mess. It’s confusing for sure, especially for kids w ADHD or other challenges

Teacher here, and I can share in your frustration. We have been given the directions at the HS where I teach, to assign due dates to assignments, BUT to always give students grace and the only real deadlines we can assign are interims and end of the quarter. We have also been told we can only take off 10% at the most for something being late. I have been told by some students, specifically in IB, that some of their teachers do not follow these guidelines. In my position, it is frustrating, because I would like to be more strict, but am just following the directions of my administration. However, clearly other teachers are just doing their own thing. I see how that would be extremely frustrating from the parent end, and also hope that next year there are concrete rules that must be followed across the board. I can see how the lax rules this year have negatively impacted my students. They don't care about completing work at all. Are happy to sit on their phone all class because they know they have weeks to turn something in. They don't care about any of the weak consequences we assign for inappropriate phone use, and don't care about 10% off on an assignment.

On the other hand, the kid has another teacher who won't accept anything even a minute late. I've literally looked at the timestamp in Canvas and it was 3 minutes past the due date and remained a 50% forever (kid said they weren't allowed to submit after that).
