ParentVue Complaint

Anonymous
I just want to vent. My son is a freshman at Blair. I cannot understand why ParentVue does not have a checkmark or another symbol to show when students have completed and turned in an assignment. It’s infuriating that I can’t see when my son has turned in assignments. Is there anyone that we can contact to have this issue solved?

Just go into the gradebook, click on the class, and look at the list of assignments. It'll either had a grade, not graded, or missing

Exactly, it's there but requires some technical competence. Sorry but just get tired of the never-ending stream of complaints about things that are obvious.

To be sure none of this matters if the teachers don’t keep things updated on their end.

I have learned not to worry too much about what is in ParentVue. It is a lagging indicator. And if you use it to hassle your teen, you will invariably drive a wedge between the two of you.

I have soooooo many complaints about parentvue! There are a lot of issues. I have to check both parentvue and canvas and that still only gives about 60% of the information one needs to figure out what work is due when and if it’s been turned in. Some teachers make it easier but others absolutely don’t. I depends on part what platform the teacher uses for assignments and whether it integrates with parentvue or not. Also depends on how timely the teacher is with grading.

Teach your child to use an actual assignment planner and check off when they turn in assignments, teach your child something instead of complaining about it. Are you going to make sure they turn in college assignments too?

It's easier to tell at a glance if you use the ParentVue website instead of the app. The website view of the gradebook will have "0 Missing Assignments" or "1 Missing Assignment" right next to each class.

This isn't always accurate. Sometimes it says 0 missing assignments and then if you open up the class there are a bunch of ones with 50% credit which is what teachers have to do when things not turned in.

Is it better in Canvas?

Canvas is only accurate for things assigned and graded within Canvas, which isn't everything.

In my experience, it has been accurate. The 50% credits have consistently had the Missing tag there, so it's been easy to find them.

Why don't you sit with your son and have him show you, class by class in Canvas, what is turned in? That is where it is marked. That way you can spot problems with how he is using Canvas and provide advice. (For example - many students are terrible about managing their to-do lists and their email notifications.) Sure, there may be assignments that are turned in on paper, but Synergy (StudentVue/ParentVue) is usually the last to be updated, after the teacher has graded everything.

At my HS, every assignment is supposed to be created in Canvas with a due date, regardless of the actual form of the assignment (Canvas assignment, Canvas quiz, paper worksheet, poster, video, other platform, etc.) This is so that students can use the Canvas calendar feature to tell what is missing and what is coming up. For my classes, I will send a Canvas notification to everyone who is missing an assignment the day after it was due, with a link to the assignment. So now there are three places to see missing work - to-do list, calendar, Canvas inbox. By the time I grade the assignment and sync it to Synergy (which then also shows "missing") it's at least a week overdue. Be proactive by monitoring with him what is coming up, rather than reactive to something he didn't do.

If you find an assignment given 50% but not marked missing, then your student missed both the due date and the deadline and may not turn in the work anymore, (or they did really poorly and didn't earn above a 50%). The "missing" tag (old "Z" tag) means that it will still be accepted.

Not the case here.
