Central Office Support to Schools?

The usually lack of support from central office to actual teachers and students.

That's odd they're in the trenches helping out so much at our school.

Which school, and what type of support?

But don't let facts ruin a good narrative!

Sending Central Office staff to the schools who are in the need the most would be better than doing nothing. It’s this type of mentality to ignore the need for help that led to votes of no confidence and 800 teachers leaving the school system.

I don't think that's really true. 500 to 600 leave in any normal year and following the pandemic people are burnt out ... Sure I get you have
An axe to grind with the central office but let's be real

Our elementary school would be thrilled with just 1-2 extra hands- no need for 15. I think that if they prioritize schools that are unable to get subs, they could at least make a dent. It's better than nothing!

I've worked in both central office and school-based positions. Central office isn't exactly a walk in the park but it's certainly not as hard as being in a school-based position. If there were ever a time to be putting special projects and meetings aside, it's now. Schools are in desperate need of healthy bodies to help cover all of these shortages and as another PP suggested, even just one body from central would be helpful.

When there is a good economy (plenty of jobs to be had), it is tough to get subs because the pay is so bad and there are no benefits.

It is economics 101, supply and demand. Increase pay for subs, you'll get more subs.

Oh, you poor naive person, OP. There has been a MASSIVE sub shortage for years, and it's only become worse during the pandemic. All over the USA. There is also a MASSIVE shortage of bus drivers all over the USA. MCPS has had to hire aggressively to get their numbers up to barely acceptable.

Sure there’s bees shortage of substitutes for years. Yet MCPS hasn’t tried new practices such as increased pay and benefits to have a core group of flexible staff to have on hand as substitutes.

The OP’s post however was about the impact of the current COVID surge. It’s bad enough that Central Office has let staffing shortages get to dire levels but Central Office staff should be substituting to help fill in gaps.

It would be great if you volunteered then.

I’m this poster and a classroom teacher constantly being forced to “volunteer.” Our school has 8 staff out and 1 sub today. It is not okay.

That's not ok, but most of central office is out with covid if you look at the numbers. MCPS has failed to keep covid out of the schools. Its not ok, but it was to be expected when MCPS said they will stay open no matter what.

There’s less than 40 Central Office employees with COVID right now. That number has been pretty consistent for much of May. That number is no where near the majority of staff members in Central Office unless MCPS is not reporting all the cases. OSSI wasn’t answering telephones this morning if that’s any indication.

That’s a pretty big member.
